Evening/morning all:
Lindybird; Yes!! What was the Drama next door?? Oh by the way, remember the "Tiger Woods" event down the road where somone drove into a neighbor's garage? Well, heard it was yet another neighbor's young son, totally potted (drunk) who was coming home late and somehow mistook the gas pedal for the brake!! Apparently, the Fire Department was there, etc., and had to cut the (uninjured) perpetrator out of the car because the garage door collapsed onto the car. They've just completed the repairs.
OG. Ooooh. Another lovely butterfly. Thanks!
Alan: Watched the US/Ghana match - felt so bad for the U.S. team (but if they'd won, would've felt bad for the Ghana team!) They started off so lackluster; then picked up in the second half, but then hit (to me at least) a sort of slump toward the end of the second half, but picked up again in the overtime, but to no avail. It doesn't matter which team/player I support, I always feel bad for the loser. These people put so much time and effort into their games.... Soccer is so much more exciting than U.S. football where, as I've noted before, the players are all done up like Michelin men and spend most of their tiime in a pile.....
AQ: We had floor heaters in our church in Watford, and everyone huddled over them (and roasted!) during the winter months. I missed the "red card" reference in your response to Alan....."
Our new back gate got installed today. I worked in the garden (after footie!) and managed to decimate a Potato Vine. Was trying to "re-install" it on the wall, but thought I'd be clever and trim it. Big mistake. Oh well, it'll grow back.
Afternoon all,
Fantastic picture of the orchid OG.
Auntie : Glad you managed to see the ospreys for real. Webcams are ok but there is nothing like the real thing. I did watch the Brazil v Holland match and was surprised at the result. Holland have done amazingly well and have a good chance of getting to the final now.
Everyone else thanks for the chat , links , pics etc.
Today Lady P and I went to Barnwell Country Park for a picnic by the lake. On the way home we saw a heron, 2 red kites and 2 kestrels. Amazing what you can see from the car when driving down country lanes.
Weather is sunny intervals and still warm. Temp 21.2c
Agree with Alan that that is a fantastic picture of a just gorgeous orchid, OG.
Have just watched the Ladies Wimbledon Final (justified standing there watching by doing the dreaded ironing at the same time....) and Serena Williams has won it again, she found it easy to beat the Russian girl, who nevertheless showed a lot of promise and was gracious in defeat.
Well , Its been a disappointing day at the tennis and the football.
Disappointing that the efficiency of the Germans stifled the flair and creativity of Argentina.
Disappointing that a man beat a woman in the ladies singles final.
Lets hope that Spain and Paraguay produce a cracker of a match this evening.
Maybe you need to forget sport and watch Ospreys full time from now on, Alan (except when Dundee are playing, of course!)
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Alan: This World Cup thingy has been surprising all round- except that of course I should have placed a bet with Ladbrokes that England wouldn't win it!
Have to agree in part to the comment on the ladies tennis - it is all about bashing the ball really hard these days - I sound old when I say it used to be such fun watching the more subtle games ladies played a few years ago, with clever little drop shots etc.
auntie: So pleased to hear you managed to have your trip to Pohtiolampi and saw 'real' ospreys!
Great entertainment from Goldfinches here today - lots of them about, but one particular pair were trying to persuade a young one he could feed himself. Whenever they were near, he did his "feed me" performance, which is very energetic as they flap and flutter and swivel. Occasionally he would take a mouthful if he thought they weren't watching, so they would fly to the roof to leave him to it, and he would promptly take off and join them. So they would all come back and the performance began again!
We are planning to go to Caerlaverock tomorrow - but weather forecast isn't good. OH needs to see the optics man who comes there every two months, as there is a rattle inside the telescope, sound like a loose screw. The "Birding Biker" (or is it "Biking Birder"? - can't remember which) will also be arriving there on his fundraising tour of WWT and RSPB sites. There is also a guided walk on the merse, but I can't do that as access is by "kissing gates" so my mobility scooter won't go through. If it's really wet, we may not go at all, but if we do go, I might not post here until evening.
I think you are right about the sport OG. Odin delivering a fish was more exciting than the first half of Spain v Paraguay. 1 shot at goal and that was by Paraguay!!!
Anyone interested in Big Rig Steve's travels, he is sending live from his vacation car - en route back from Washington (State) coast into Oregon.
Starting new thread.
