Weekly Chat, Sunday June 13, 2010

Morning everyone and welcome to a new week!  Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!).  OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.

Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?

OG When you have a minute, perhaps you could share your gingerbread recipe? As I said, OH's mother's recipe has so much butter in it, I fear for his arteries----- I think gingerbread as opposed to MIL's recipe would be a little healthier?!

Less butter, but full of sweet things!  Will put it on your page - may be tomorrow as garden needs watering tonight - by the way OH arrived in time for dinner.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hooray!   Hamish has dragged his blanket out - so it must be summer now!

We said yesterday that it was a "2 door day" - that means that we open both of the conservatory doors and prop them open, instead of just the one.  Only do that when there is no wind as it whooshes through the house. Same again today, and lots of nice Mr Sunshine, so have enjoyed myself going walking and also some gardening.  Buzz loves it when the doors are open, and he can trot in and out.

georgeg:    'A trouble shared is a trouble halved' - used to be a common remark when we were younger, and it still applies. Glad that your b.in.law is going to be a bit nearer home.

OG:   Those deep red roses are an emotional reminder for me, of my much loved and missed sister-in-law: my OH's older sister:  she gave me the rose bush,  but died nearly 19 years ago aged only 51 and so did not live to see her adorable 4 grandchildren. She was a beautiful woman both inside and out, and taught me so much about human relationships.  I could go on, but will leave it at that.

Diane:  Wonder why Trucker Steve has not taken TK the Truck Kat this time?

dibnlib:    Think you should get that growth removed for Dillon, it may give him trouble in future if it's on his lip. I know its a pain in the pocket when we go to the Vets:   thank goodness, we don't have too much trouble with Buzz.

margobird:   Was reading on the Daily Chat how you are crossing your fingers to go to LG next year:  I shall cross everything for you, mainly because then you can tell us all about it afterwards!

Must go and water some of my new little plants now.

  • george g what a worrying time for you and your SiL.  My thoughts are with you.  So gad you feel you can talk to us all about your worrying time.  It is a great site with so many  kind people with a lot of understanding when people have problems.

  • OG/HEATHER/ANNETTE  AND EVERYONE smiling at your reminisences and it reminds me of a work colleague just about 5 or 6 years ago. she used call her dining room, the drawing room (thought that word went out with the ark,) but what used to really curl me up was when she talked of her grown up sons - in their late 20, early 30s- calling up and asking to speak to " Mummy or Daddy please" does anyone that age really call their parents Mummy and Daddy . Hope I haven't offended anyone.

  • Enjoying all the comments on the weekly cfhat, brings back memories.  I don't remember the war as I was born in 1942 but I do remember mangles which my grandma and mother both had and I often think how easy we have things nowadays.

Just going out into the garden to anchor down 2 trays that have bird food on as the fox we have visiting likes to either tip it all over the place or make off with the trays.

  • MARGOBiRD   Thanks for the good wishes for Dillon.

LINDYBIRD   the lump is actually a swollen bit on his lip ( the bit at the side which is naturally a bit lumpy anyway) there is probably a technical name for that part of the lip. But I don't think it will reduce much in size even with antibiotics as it is in such a delicate area.  Thought it was improving but after rubbing his muzzle on the grass yesterday I think we are back to square 1.We will see what Julie says on Fri am and I am fully expecting a wallet unfriendly decision....... I will just deduct the bill from his pocket money.  Thinking about it he owes us a small fortune already!!!!!!!!

  • That’s really odd!  Some posts have appeared on this thread between others which I have already seen!!

Dibnlib – your post was among those, so if you find my email in your inbox you can ignore it because I now know about Dillon’s lip, and was very sorry to read it.  It could be that now it has bled, there is a way through for the infection to come out too, so maybe an operation won’t be needed, but I am sure your vet will give you the best advice when you see her on Friday.  We’ll be thinking of you.

Diane – thanks for pointing me to Steve’s older blogs.  I read the note about TK’s summer holiday with Grandma – I wonder if this is a “trial separation” so he can have a new tractor unit?  TL seemed to indicate in one of her posts that this is a possibility.  His cam seems to be stalled right now.

Lindybird – it has been a lovely day here today, and we have really been so lucky with the weather for the painter.  Been watering plants again this evening, and have left OH out there with the hose.  Sorry if I made you sad mentioning the roses, but it sounds as if they give you wonderful memories – thank you for sharing.

Dibnlib – our elder daughter still calls us Mummy and Daddy, and she is 41!  In her teenage years her then-fiancé and now-husband used to say she was using twice the breath she would saying only one syllable instead of the two!  But she has persisted.   Her ten-years-younger brother only says Mummy when he wants something!  I think in-between daughter#2 sometimes calls us by our first names, as do both sons-in-law.  We don’t mind what they call us, so long as they communicate from time to time!  (Don’t worry, I am not offended!!)

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Oh dear, dibnlib, sounds as if it could be a bit 'wallet unfriendly' - my OH always says that its time that Buzz went out to work to earn his keep - he certainly has enough energy for it.  In winter I threaten to attach him to a sled to pull me to the shops, but he would just keep running, I think, without brakes.

  • OH is still outside.  He's filling feeders; which reminds me, we had no less than six Woodpigeons at one time yesterday!   And, much better, we had six Goldfinches together today, including our first young one for this year!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG;   Don't be sorry for mentioning the roses and jogging my memory:  I like to think of her often, as she was one of those rare people who always made you feel better for seeing her, whatever the circumstances.  Her two daughters were my bridesmaids over 37 years ago & we still all keep in touch even though they live in other parts of the country: their young children are wonderful and a credit to their parents. Here is a pic of the roses mentioned:
