Weekly Chat, Sunday, May 23, 2010

Hi all. Just starting this 'coz going out to birthday dinner with OH tonight (Indian - his choice). Back to catch up with last week's final posts later, (which included a great photo from OG's trip).

  • Lindybird: Oh my. Soon it'll be Google Moon (but no street view yet??)  :-(   :-)

Sandy:  We knew our group was newsworthy.

    OG: Cute photo!

Second tree person came this morning with a three-word suggestion "Cut it down."  No way dude!!

  • Good for you, Annette.   Trees are special, and it should be given every chance.

Sandy:  EJ & Odin are famous!  EJ even has a photo in the press!  Wonderful.

tish:  Your book sounds great, bet you can't put it down.

    Loved the birdie pic,  OG.

We are off for the day tomorrow, to help No. 2 son with his wallpapering (as he's never done it before) Husband is in charge: I'm in charge of scissors, lunch and Dog, and Buzz is helping everyone & has promised not to get underfoot, which should be interesting.

Keep an eye on those ospreys for me while I'm gone.

  • Good evening all (UK time).  Weather forecast originally suggested rain today – was changed to fine early this morning – and, guess what, it rained – very light, and intermittent.  Painting man came and said it had been worse his side of the main road!  So he started the job.  OH traced the problem with the charity accounts – Chair had given him the same details twice on some undated cash transactions (he keeps “politely reminding” her about audit trails … talk about deaf ears!)  Anyway, it’s going to the examiner tomorrow, and will be out of our hands (and minds) after the AGM in June when he steps down as Treasurer.  I did a small charity mailout this morning (different charity) and we went out briefly this afternoon.   Both found it tiring, but this evening we planted our second row of peas in the garden – so quite a varied day.  Annette – I Maddonari looks very good – and sounds a good way to raise funds and bring joy to spectators.  I am sure your roses will be holding their heads high for the festival, and what a wonderful old building!  Setting off north again from Saturday!  First stop not far from Glasgow, to investigate a country park which sounds interesting, then on for our pre-booked holiday by Loch Awe (the previous two have been slotted in at shorter notice).  If we are not fully fit by Saturday, we shall go direct to Loch Awe on Monday.  Then we shall have a night on the edge of Edinburgh Thursday next week, to be there for “Gardening Scotland” at the Highland Showground on the Friday.  Diane – your description of Indiana, and especially around where you live, was very interesting.  We too have some ferns in the garden – nothing exotic or venerable, but love the curled leaves unfurling in spring time to the fronds of freshest green.  These are in my tiny woodland area, by my beasties’ log and my small Birch tree from Glencoe – which also has bluebells beneath it right now.  Alan – wonderful scenic photo with reflection in the water – so … um … reflective!  Lindybird – thanks for picture of Heswall – sound like it was really Buzz’s day!  Thanks for link to interesting report on lunar mapping – so pleased they are donating from image sales to charity too.  Annette – don’t cut it down if it can possibly be saved!!

And now a cheery picture of Mandarin Ducks - they are so entertaining - we had just watched a synchronised preening session!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Evening all:

OG: Those Mandarin Ducks are fabulous - what smart outfits they're wearing.  Glad OH won't be coping with audit-averse lady too much longer. Have a great trip; hope the weather is good for you.

We have hired the first tree person to tidy up and stabilize the tree, but will plan for a replacement...  I'm getting a lot done in the evenings these days....    Have friend coming for meal tonight, but won't have to rush her out the door to watch ospreys!  :-)   Off to sort out dinner.

  • Yay!!!!  That's excellent news!!!

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Here in little ole Adelaide, scientists this week decided to scare off some flying foxes from the suburb of Fullarton. 1,300 have come from the eastern states. The clever scientists created noise - leaf blowers, chain saws, banging metal pans - to remove the furry creatures. Well, they were scared off . . . but they returned at midnight. • Wonderful news about Lily and Hope!   Gary (thank you Gary) posted the news on the Daily Update with a Facebook link, which I'm copying here http://www.facebook.com/lily.the.black.bear?ref=ts. And I followed a link on that page to  http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/169751/ing   that gave more info. And, of course, there's the Den Cam update page http://www.bear.org/website/lily-a-hope/live-den-cam.html.

  • Oh AQ. That's funny. Maybe run off the human residents instead?

  • If I had a choice between flying foxes in trees and stupid humans with leaf blowers, chain saws, et al, you know what I would prefer.
