Loch of the Lowes - 2010

Thought I'd start a separate thread for the posting of news, updates, pictures etc. from the nest at the Loch of the Lowes. Now that the first chick has hatched at Loch Garten the Daily Update page is going to get too unwieldy if it is used for news from LotL as well as LG, and the "News From Other Nests" is getting pretty full as well.

  • I have not seen any fish delivered this afternoon.

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • They keep looking down at this part of the Loch. I don't know why though.

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

Sandra Lady is just stunning and how much better she looks, eyes look really clear now.  I haven't seen a fish delivery this afternoon but as yet she is not shouting for one.

  • Another great poem on LOTL blog. From Marjorie:

    "

When the days are growing longer and spring is in the air we look to the horizon and scan the sky and stare
For coming into vision is a figure so well known, after long bleak months of waiting, Our Lady’s come back home!

She gathers sticks and bedding, prepares the nest with care, she looks towards the southern skies but Eric isn’t there. She waits and then grown anxious, for time is moving fast, then into sight flies 7Y – a mate for her at last!

The courtship starts in earnest and soon 3 eggs are laid, she starts her lonely vigil to keep them warm and safe. At first the male is loopy, brings sticks and moss galore, but that don’t feed a hungry girl who needs fish by the score.

The eggs are soon at hatching point, first one and then the other, the third left whole, must be a dud, once more she is a mother. The chicks grow stronger every day and Frank has been a treasure Our Lady gently feeds her young to watch has been a pleasure.

But then one night she falls so ill, no strength in her frail form, we all shed tears and pray that she will stay with us till morn. For two whole days she lay so still, no food or drink she took, her chicks were fed by father Frank, all we could do was look.

Then Monday came, she raised her head, she still looked so unsteady – throughout the day she came alive, then suddenly she was ready. She looked around and saw the Loch – the gift of life was there, she spread her wings and took a chance then soared into the air.

She stunned us all and made the press, her fame spread for a reason, her life goes on her chicks grow big, she’s had a stressful season. Her story isn’t over yet, the chicks still need their Mum, but soon they’ll fledge and feed themselves then Lady’s work is done.

She needs to feed, build up reserves, and heal her weakened heart, and soon instinct will tell her, her journey south must start. We’ll watch her go with heavy heart, she’ll leave an empty space. Will she return? We do not know. But no one can take her place.

I feel priviledged to have witnessed this majestic ospreys story, and have learnt so much in three short months May she reign in all her glory."

  • Thanks, Alan and of course, Marjorie.   She has told the whole story in one.  We will watch her go with heavy heart, if she does go that is.  This has indeed been an epic season for her, and for us watching.

  • That is such a beautiful poem of our Wonderful Lady!!

I am going to print it out and keep it with the first poem that was written.

    Thanks Alan.

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • 18:20 and all is peaceful.

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • Fish brought in at 6:30.

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • Can't have been very big, they have eaten it. The Laird flew in and landed and left very fast!

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)
