Daily Update (LG Nest) Saturday 22nd May

Well another day begins with the night-time. EJ is fidgiting again and rolling the eggs although the chicks sound quiet now and Lady at LOTL is having a moment - fidgiting a bit but now settled down.

All you early watchers I hope you find that EJ's 1st chick will have hatched. Capture it if you can and we will find out in the morning.

Goodnight all.

  • Thanks for all the comment on the second fish. I don't understand. As we all know, EJ could have wolfed that fish down on her own, had she wanted to. I hope he brings a third fish.

  • EJ is treating Odin as if he is one of her chicks and making sure HE eats. That is troubling

He brings a fish and she brings some back for him.

She also saved some of the first fish so the chick would have a second meal . As she couldn't trust him to bring more fish for the chick  in time for another meal . The chicks at this age need to eat a little at a time , but  often

I hope it is just new father confusion of his role

  • EJ on another comfort break:

  • Been out most of the afternoon so catching up - just a great pic DJoan and to all the others who have posted pictures, fantastic.  It must be hot out there, it certainly is here in Northants.    Mind you weather forecast for the middle of the week says temps going back to normal for May!!!!

Barbara Jean: Everything you described there is perfectly normal behavior, I can assure you.

All osprey pairs I've ever followed have shared fish in that manner.

As you say it's little and often for the chicks - that is why she left the tail end for later. I think there was some confusion over the second fish delivery. I just think that she wasn't hungry as she had recently polished off the previous one and therefore let him have it all. He'd simply been too quick with the second one.

Apart from the infamous fishing line incident Odin performed his fatherly duties perfectly well last year.

  • A quick glimpse of the chick just now as EJ lifted up from the nest slightly to see if it was OK. Can just hear some tiny chirping.

  • Lovely pics coming from LOTL with the Laird and Lady .

EJ seems to be enjoying the late afternoon sun , a bit windy.

  • Just comer in from gardening and am soo tired.   EJ still sitting there in the sun with her baby/  Super.  Also what a good idea to start a different thread.   Do SWT LOTL not have there own blog anyway!??

Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.

  • Thanks Sandy ! That eases my mind. I have only watched the LG nest for 3 years and this is the first year I have watched LOTL's nest

  • Hi Tish.  I've been in the garden too this afternoon.  First time this year.  The heat is exhausting.  Positively Mediterranean althoug I have been getting rid of plants (especially Mediterranean ones)  that didn't make it through the harsh winter.  LOTL does have its own blog but its hard work  being a member of lots of blog 'clubs'.  Just nice to add the odd comment on the RSPB site about what is going on there from time to time without clogging up this page too much.  Isn't it great to see the little chick.  What a hot day to be its first.  Good preparation for the African temps later in the year.
