Weekly Chat Sunday, May 16 2010

Hi all: Thanks for chat and Ernie info - don't forget to read the last few posts of last week to catch up on folks.

Brenda:  My sister has been to the Chelsea Flower Show several times and has always loved it. Do hope the weather is kind on your day.

Patriciat:  How nice that people were so generous with your fund-raising efforts. Good for you - you must have a winning way!!

dibnlib: Thanks for spelling out Ernie's "real" name. Doesn't sound half as much fun as his more familiar name. Actually, I remember now - Premium Bonds - they were being sold when I was still in the UK.  I think my sister also has some that she bought way back when....

Emma: Painting is done - although just noticed a smudge of Pot of Cream (the paint) on a wood ceiling beam. How did it get there!!  Took all the blue painter's tape off the glass panes this afternoon and put the hardware back on and it looks pretty nice. Do need to do some tidying up where paint trickled under the tape and also onto the hinges a bit, but all pretty minimal.

Have been keeping tabs on Trucker Steve, whose cat has an eye problem. He's going to take her to the vet.  He's got a hard trip this time - three days of 11 hours a day to the next stop in Wisconsin.  He's in Montana now, where it's well into the evening.

Off to see how EJ is doing.  Have a nice Sunday morning all.

  • TerryM.    What a shame, both for your poor boss and for you, when your holiday was so near.  Do hope you can get away later on.

  • Annette:    How is your toothache? Hope its gone now.

  • Terry, so sorry about your trip:( Nothing worse than the expectation and then nothing. I hope your boss does recover quickly.

  • Noticed this morning that our Group is now up to 326 members - wonder how much it will swell this year once the chicks are hatched?

  • Just calling by to say goodnight.  So much happening in the garden before next holiday!  Will get round to a catch-up post one dayDibnlib - I have replied by email!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Evening all:  Daily Update page abuzz all day (I was gone most of it and heading out to roses now).

Thanks folks, toothache lurking but not a problem; have made a tentative appt. with dentist Monday just in case....  have painkillers standing by for the weekend, so all set.

Lindybird: At least you didn't miss an LG hatch (just don't answer the phone next time). :-)  Diane: Thanks for the additional info on the oil spill links.   TerryM. So sorry about the trip - bummer. Hope your boss recovers totally (and quickly?)    OG; You're going on another holiday?

  • Lindybird - Lovely blossom. TerryM - What a shame to miss holiday. Now why couldn't your boss be considerate and wait until you had already gone . . . Annette - Best cure for toothache is to make an appointment or to sit for 5 mins in dentist's waiting room. LOL

Just home from multi-tasking expedition. Returned books to library in distant suburb (better selection) but didn't get any more as lift is out (has been for a month) and non-fiction is upstairs. It is history week coming up and I'm saving my knees. Called into a hand-knitting exhibition wearing my favourite homemade jumper. Rather chuffed that it was admired as I chose & designed the colour combination. Then to a real butcher (not the supermarket kind) for 4 meals of meat. Expensive but I shall freeze batches and ration over next month.

  • Last of my weekend trip. Somewhere we caught a glimpse of a stupid emu running along a fence. Also a young wedge tail eagle being chased by an ambitious (delusioned?) fox. I didn’t have time to snap pics.

Quorn named after Quorndon in Leicestershire, was an important railway town in the olden days. The north-south and east-west lines crossed here. Now the town is sleepy. No accommodation was large enough to take the 40 of us, so we were spread around 5 locations. The 2nd hand bookshop was open quite late Sat and I managed to restrict myself to 3 books. Ever since I was at school I have wanted to read Myrtle Rose White’s 'No Roads Go By', in which she wrote about her time on an isolated property east of Lake Frome 1915+. Nearest neighbour 20 miles away. I’ve enjoyed it very much.

The train track through Pichi Richi Pass was the originally the route of the Ghan railway to Alice Springs. Our train was drawn by a diesel. Drat. I was hoping for the steam engine. But it costs $3000 to run it and they save it for busy times of year. It had rained overnight (and was still drizzling lightly) so all the tree leaves and bark were fresh and colourful. First a view in the pass and then our train.

    Solar powered train signals.

  • Hey AQ: Congrats on the admiring glances (for your jumper).  :-)  Good for you.   Thanks for the train pix. How far is that area from Adelaide?  The land looks quite dry. Is it like here, where the first serious rainfalls of the winter will turn it a lush green?  There's still a Ghan train, right?   I love steam trains. Quite a few "old"  railroads use them here - they cost more money to ride and they tend to save them for wine/dinner/special outing trips.  Otherwise they use the diesels.

My rose bed is so much easier to care for than the previous one  I've only got 20 bushes now as opposed to 35. Picked up salads on the way home from a nearby cafe (our usual Friday evening routine) and just came back from a walk to look at other folks' gardens.   Had better keep a close eye on EJ tonight. Wouldn't want to miss anything!!

Annette - Quorn is about 200 miles north of Adelaide, 3-3½ hour by car. With the rain up there last weekend, I expect little green sprouts will be appearing. There is still a Ghan train but very modern. Also the northern route is now about 100 miles west to avoid washaways (when it does happen to rain). It was misty in Pichi Richi, just like LG this morning!!!
