Weekly Chat Sunday, May 16 2010

Hi all: Thanks for chat and Ernie info - don't forget to read the last few posts of last week to catch up on folks.

Brenda:  My sister has been to the Chelsea Flower Show several times and has always loved it. Do hope the weather is kind on your day.

Patriciat:  How nice that people were so generous with your fund-raising efforts. Good for you - you must have a winning way!!

dibnlib: Thanks for spelling out Ernie's "real" name. Doesn't sound half as much fun as his more familiar name. Actually, I remember now - Premium Bonds - they were being sold when I was still in the UK.  I think my sister also has some that she bought way back when....

Emma: Painting is done - although just noticed a smudge of Pot of Cream (the paint) on a wood ceiling beam. How did it get there!!  Took all the blue painter's tape off the glass panes this afternoon and put the hardware back on and it looks pretty nice. Do need to do some tidying up where paint trickled under the tape and also onto the hinges a bit, but all pretty minimal.

Have been keeping tabs on Trucker Steve, whose cat has an eye problem. He's going to take her to the vet.  He's got a hard trip this time - three days of 11 hours a day to the next stop in Wisconsin.  He's in Montana now, where it's well into the evening.

Off to see how EJ is doing.  Have a nice Sunday morning all.

  • CIRRUS   thank you for the update on mains at LG. Now have it on the LG blog, maybe mine is just slow on catching up.

OG   Guess you are home now, it was nice to meet you both at Simpsons. Did you see any dolphins?

Thanks, Annette. That is, indeed, a really dark place where he is parked. Some of those places would be downright scary. I don't know whether I could sleep in some of those spots. The big, busy truckstops wouldn't be so bad, but places like that spot tonight would make me plenty nervous. BTW: I think trucks usually have blackout privacy curtains that the drivers can pull closed, either between the sleeper and the cab or around the windshield and side windows -- or both. The trucks come equipped that way, or you can buy the curtains in truckstops. They're expensive, though.

the husband of a close friend owns a haulage company and I remember years ago she told me that the cab (fully equipped) came in at £55,000

  • CIRRUS  thank you for pic of the hatch at LOTL

  • Diane what beautiful pics of the bear cubs.

ANNETTE poor you with toothache, hope it goes away PDQ

  • Sandy/Gary: What about running Windows 7 in XP mode, Did you try this? I hasten to add that I have not tried it! I have a new W7 laptop and have only switched on the old desktop once in the last three months. The laptop has no Real Player as yet, since I suspected compatibility is an issue with Windows Media Player, the latest version 12. This version does not work on Firefox, only IE8 I have found.

This afternoon I bought a Sony BDP S370 mainly for film/movies streaming, but it also does YouTube videos, without a PC, I have only just taken it out of the box.

  • Got an 'emergency call' from a relative this afternoon to go help move some furniture (our car is big enough to take large items)  - so had to be dragged screaming from the pc., and sit drinking tea in someone's living room as if I had all the time in the world, when I would rather have been watching LG!  Oh well, have done my Good Deed for the Day.

Thanks for pix, posts, videos (Diane: Haven't been able to access the oil spill; probably jammed with viewers).

Annette: I had to refresh a couple of times, but I was just now able to access the Gulf Oil Spill Webcam. It's a remarkable, heart-stopping sight. In the time I was watching, I saw two eels and lots of fish in the vicinity of the explosion.

The government has posted a notice saying that the webcam has been experiencing very heavy traffic, and BP is working on improving the feed. BP is also making the webcam available on their website now. On the original government page, there's now a link to the alternative BP site. (I can't copy that link here because it's very long, and I'm afraid I'll mess up the LG page.) Original site: http://globalwarming.house.gov/spillcam/

Also, you can view video clips showing the gushing oil from various perspectives underwater. This page also carries the latest news about the efforts to stop the oil and the damage. Here's that link: http://globalwarming.house.gov/mediacenter/pressreleases_2008?id=0223 For me, though, seeing the live webcam with the fish and other life around the gusher was a profound viewing experience. Very disturbing, but an awe-inspiring sight.

  • Just a quick hello all before we eat.  My countdown clock for "Holiday to Boat of Garten" has got to zero but I CAN'T GO! :(((   I have had to be in the office all day this week instead of my usual 9 - 3 Mon - Thurs because sadly my boss has had a slight stroke and there's only me left, so holiday postponed.  OH is still going early next week for a week because we were to meet a friend and help her nearly finish her Munros, then whizz over to LG for osprey watching.  He'll miss that part out.  Hoping we can go later but it's when to fit it in at work, and will my boss be back?  He's expecting to be back in two weeks but I'm not so sure.  I haven't had a holiday since October so I am in dire need, and will be even more so after this!  I work at a golf club so need to get the committee organised!

I'm up to page 5 so a few to go.  I was watching LotL hatching at work yesterday, brill!
