Weekly Chat, Sunday May 2, 2010

HI all: I'm late starting this.  Be sure to check the last two pages of the previous Weekly Chat - some interesting links, news, updates on nest data, photos. I haven't had a chance to read them all but off to do that now.

  • Afternoon all. Dull and damp here today. Bought a few plants and a mini lilac tree when I was out this morning ... I am rapidly becoming a plantaholic :))) My plan is to get the garden all organised before the chicks hatch & then I will have plenty of time to watch the nest!

Thanks to all for chat, links, reminders etc ... off to check the daily page now.

  • Went off to see the extra notes that Brenda  mentioned, and found a NEW BLOG by Debbie.

    Entitled "One fish... etc"

Wonderful news also on there that a male has returned to Rutland for the 1st time since he fledged & migrated. They will have the champagne out to celebrate, I'm sure.

  • Gary :  definately going to watch the NBG tagging. Just about to connect my laptop to the big tele now.

Just been out for a walk with the Thunderdog and we were walking along this path with a grassed strip along the side. I could see 2 sparrows on the grass just ahead and to the right. I thought to myself they will fly away when Hamish gets a bit closer. Before we did get any closer a sparrow hawk swooped down from behind my right shoulder and attempted to take out one of the sparrows. It was gone in a flash but I could see that its talons were empty. That was one lucky sparrow. Its amazing what you can see just taking a walk with the dog.

  • Morning all: Thanks for links, pix, updates, etc.  WIll try to catch what I can but must get organized here. Someone coming at 10 to look at garden project.....

  • Just looked in on the Derby peregrines and saw the chicks unattended for a brief moment, so took a quick pic:

  • Oh my, oh my, oh my, Sandy  - what little darlings. Just imagine ....  these wee white balls of fluff grow up to be a big big and amazing bird of prey.

Is anyone else having problems accessing the Estonia White Tailed Eagle video cam??? For several days now I have been unsuccessful.

  • Yes, it's so exciting about the male returning to Rutland. I often wonder if Nethy might not be somewhere over here right now.

  • Alan P. Dog walking does throw up some lovely surprises.  Last May I had what was almost literally a head to head encounter with a sparrowhawk while walking my lot.  It flfew out of the foliage on one side of the path, missed my head by inches and disappeared towards the golf course on the other side.  Fortunately his built-in guidance and avoidance system was greatly superior to mine - the closeness took my breath away.

Lovely to see the pics of peregrine chicks.  Our local peregrines left about 3 years ago - female found dead by the roadside and the male seemed to pine away.  I miss seeing them at the nest and watching the young learning to fly.

  • OG  hope you enjoyed your visit to Ayr. We used to live there 1989 - 1993 when OH was still in the RAF and worked at the Scottish Air Traffic Control Centre. I do not think Dobbies was there then but we did used to go to Culzean and walk around Swan Pond. We had Harvey in those days (another Goldie) look forward to hearing from you before you leave for your journey north.

Gave Dillon a jolly good brush this am and enjoyed watching the sparrows come down to collect the hair. There are going to be some very snug babies round here.

Can anyone help me to identify whether it is EJ or Odin on the nest? I know she is bigger but unless I see them together I realy can't tell.
