Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 1st May 2016

However did I manage to get in ahead of the lovely Annette and the excellent Diane to start this thread?  Goodness only knows.  Perhaps both ladies are all Trumped out!!

Have a good week, everyone - and special thoughts to Margo, her lovely hubby and Billie!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Afterwards, we returned to the side of the Lake and saw the little steam train puffing along on the other side, with people hanging out to see the view from their side:

  • Brenda: Ah, now I understand. You were wondering about hanging out the sheets due to possible dirt from construction site while I read it as hanging out the sheets so you could see what was going on (that would be my tactic). :-)

Lindybird: That tree would spook me - and I want to ride on that little train (but maybe in the sunshine). Pretty streams....

Margo: Unfortunately I only have one sister, but way too many dusters...

  • Lovely to see a long post from you Margo. Glad you managed to get out for your meal and so pleased you have your beautiful Billy and fantastic OH to look after you. Best wishes to everyone else

    Kind regards

    Jenny

  • Sorry I was being such a Grumpy this morning; hospital question is now sorted: at the suggestion of consultant’s secretary who phoned back this afternoon, I have torn up the appt card, and she will have it deleted from records and tell the consultant what she has done – and she apologised!  If I had been able to speak with her on Thursday, the situation could have been resolved then but she was not being told the full story in messages via other staff!

So, now I am back to Sunday evening with replies; since then we have been finishing various odds and ends of leftover tasks, I have planted my Runner Bean seeds and put Courgettes into bigger pots in the greenhouse and frozen more herbs.  This morning, we prepared a lot of Rhubarb for the freezer and I did the final ironing before our little trip while OH cleaned the car inside and out.

Bjane – sorry to hear of your Daughter’s extra problems; I was surprised to see that you had returned to paid work last year, but I am sure you are right to give that up again while you support and encourage her as she will hopefully be helped to return to independent living.  She had done so well, and must be so frustrated not having the strength to look after herself now.  Do look after yourself too, you have always given so much to others in your caring role.  It’s lovely to see posts from you when you have the time and energy to join in.

Clare – no wonder the job was so appealing!  I hope it continues to be enough to keep your interest between Minsmere duties.

Lynette – yes, I did say that Gordon Buchanan programme was recorded some time around Christmas.  I hope you enjoyed your lunch out today, and that all was good at your OH’s dressing change.  I hope all goes well for your upcoming holiday, and that you get to see The Jungle book at the weekend – you might do well to book; you can probably do it online as I know that is what our Son does for even our little local independent cinema.

Annette – I expect you were pleased to get back to the Whale count to pass the time as you get used to your Sister’s return home.  Sorry there were none on your shift, but seeing the wee Plover chick must have been quite an experience!

Brenda – that was a big challenge for your Son to undertake, I was sorry to see his success was marred by the break-in.  I hope they can enjoy the rest of their stay in W Australia.  I see your “Good Egg” designation showed itself in caring for neighbours once again – I would like to have you as a neighbour!  You will be pleased to see above that I have calmed down after my morning rant!

Rosy – I hope you are having a good time catching up with your folks in Wiltshire; some of my ancestors came from the part of Wiltshire near Berkshire, and some current relatives on the “other side” live near Malmesbury now.

Linda – sounds as if you spent a very pleasant final day in Wales.  We have had sunshine most of today but enough surprise short showers to stop me sowing my Parsley – have to make sure it is sown in good conditions (moist but warm ground) to maintain my reputation, because Parsley grows best in a garden where the woman is boss, so I daren’t give it an excuse to fail!  I enjoyed the photos from your previous visit – we were reminiscing recently about the lovely little railways in Wales – not that I like travelling on them, but I enjoy the history and the engineering involved.

Keith – it’s lovely to welcome you (belatedly); thank you for introducing yourself and your OH; I hope our Chat provides some diversion in your difficult situation.  I do hope you get to see the local Peregrines!

Diane – pleased the Nephew and Niece were no trouble – I know they love to see you.  And did RT and Mrs RT welcome you back home as well as saying goodbye?

Margo – lovely to read your post, and so pleased you had a bed for the long transfusion.  Great that you were already strong enough for your meal out.  The eye is doing well, thanks – but have to carry on with the drops at least until a check-up next week.

Heather – good that your SiL had good news, but it sounds as if he needs to carry on looking for alternatives, with his job still being in doubt; I feel so sorry for them going through this time of insecurity.  Do take care rushing straight into your next visitors so soon after your Brother; maybe some meals out would be a good idea.

This has turned out horribly long as I wanted to comment on so many posts, so forgive me!  Good night, all.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good Morning, All.  Bright sun outside my window today, with promises from the Weatherman that things will at last, warm up this week.

OG - Don't feel you need to apologise for being grumpy - you were entitled to have a rant!! Anyway, as we all say, it's nice to come on here and grumble.....

    Glad it got sorted out.

Off for dental check up this morning, so will do some other errands whilst in Town.

  • Thank you all for the warm welcome, I promise to try not lurking any more!

Wendyb Yes I know Cinderford well although as we are in Berry Hill outside Coleford we tend to spend a lot of time falling down the hill to Monmouth, a lovely small market town in Wales (Just!).

Lindybird You are so right LG is a long way, but being a fully accessible cottage makes it worth it, especially as we have all the family with us for two weeks (then one for a rest!) and having the grandchildren with us is the icing on the cake. On a good run it takes around 9-10 hours driving time with a short break at TeBay on the M6. Two years ago it was 13 hours with traffic jams and torrential rain.

Brenda H My OH was born and brought up in West Sussex in West Wittering so know the south coast as well, also having cousins along it.

Annette LG coming up last two weeks in August and first in September. As we have seen, meeting a boar with a car leaves it a very sorry sight – the car!

5 days of good weather coming up, just right for our roofers to replace part of our roof – ought to manage some time in the garden also. I am currently trying to automate most of the watering to help reduce workload and trim down the vegetables that we grow. Greenhouse already for its plants, tomatoes, cucumbers and chillies, to arrive.

  • Nice to hear more about you, Keith.  Lovely that you can spend time with your grandchildren.  We know the Tebay Services - lovely homemade food and much preferable to the usual offerings at the services. Hope the roofers can get on, with this better weather.

Had a good morning, and ticked a couple of things off my list including dropping off our Wedding Day video at a shop where they will get it converted to a DVD for me. Not sure who else will want to see it, apart from my OH and myself, after all these years! It was originally kindly taken as a cine film by my OHs brother in law, who filmed all of our weddings in those days - it's very short and just shows my arrival at the church, some of the guests in the churchyard, and our emergence as man & wife in the rather stiff breeze that day (April). It was extra precious at the time, as it's in colour and we only had black and white photos taken by the official photographer, so my flowers and the guests outfits were all rather grey!

Still sunny here, so no excuse to not get on with some gardening.

  • Lindybird We have TeBay Mk2 at South Gloucestershire Services. All the family have been and love it but they live on the other side of the Severn. It may be 2 miles if you are a crow but a 40 min trip each way for us mere mortals!

  • Is that the one that used to be called Michaelwood Services??  Wish we were nearer to the northern one, but we only use it if we're going as far as Penrith or up to Scotland, and we havn't done that for ages.

  • Good afternoon – blood tests this morning, packing this afternoon and even got dinner all prepared for finishing later, so a bit ahead of ourselves, but I am sure we shan’t be when tomorrow morning comes!

Linda – a sunny day here too, although it wasn’t quite sure early in the morning!  Our night-time temperatures this week are the same as day-time last week, and the days are definitely getting warmer now.  I hope dental check went well.  No gardening for us today – but shall be demonstrating the current watering regime to J this evening; I tried to time the planting to minimise the care needed while we are away!

Keith – good to see another post from you.  We live in Annan, in Southwest Scotland, so you pass very near when you travel up to LG!  When we go south, we use Tebay services, but find the northbound side is less special than it used to be (we used to travel to Scotland from Lancashire).  I grow my Cucumbers and Tomatoes from seed in the greenhouse, which I keep gently heated all year; I also have two plastic “mini-greenhouses” and two cold frames.  I hope the builder does a good job for you on the roof: the weather forecast certainly looks good for the next few days.

Well, this is probably all from me until Sunday or later – unless I decide to call in on the MS Surface.  We have booked lunch out on Sunday, including J, at the OTB, to save cooking on our first day home!
