HAPPY NEW WEEK!
Last week's Chat thread is here.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
Heather – I am assuming the statins are for J’s high cholesterol – with unhealthy HDL/LDL ratio. Our minestrone was quite thick (“rustic”) with vegetables – had some leftovers plus added fresh celery and courgette – very filling. Having it again tomorrow for lunch, and I know it will be even better for having stood overnight!
Linda – I am hoping the statins won’t increase the frequency of J’s leg pains, but of course not everyone gets the same side-effects. Looks like you’ll need to take plenty of clothes on holiday and play with extra layers as the need arises! Pleased you cornered Bonnie to liberate each of her "finds" - sounds as if she lies in wait for you to drop something or leave it where she can reach!
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Heather, So glad your shower is now fixed. Hope your OH was happy with the bill :-))
OG, I can understand why you are worried about ' J ' taking statins. He will obviously talk it through with his GP and ask all the relevant questions. He may have to try a few strengths / brands before they settle on the correct one for him. OH's brother-in-law complained of leg ache when he started taking them and it took some time before it was settled which one was suitable for him.
Linda, Don't forget that your OH will need some warm clothing too, so you won't have as much spare room in his case. LOL Make sure Bonnie doesn't find your passports.
OG - second day soup, always good! I love a good minestrone, as you say, very filling with chunky veg.
There is controversy about cholesterol etc as you will know. I don't know enough to pronounce on it but a doctor friend who had a stroke at 49 years is now in his 60s having refused to take statins. He eats butter and cheese in moderation. He refers to 'the great cholesterol myth'.
Speaking of diet etc, (loosely) OH must indeed have good genes. We have just downloaded 36 pages of his family history sent by a genealogist who is a distant relation. It goes back to 1720 and I was amazed by the number of his ancestors who lived until a real old age. In the 19th century there were loads living into their eighties. Amazing. Most were farmers etc and we all know what they would have been eating!!
Not been on since early week so quite a lot has been happening. Thank you for all your news.
Annette - safe trip to see grand-daughter and glad you saw your first northern whale on your whale watch duties.
OG - soup sounded delicious. Always try and make some after we've had a chicken for Sunday lunch but must get down to making a vegetable soup again soon.
Thinking of Margo and note that she didn't have a comfortable time at her last transfusion - hope all is well now.
Had to bomb down to Stevenage today as Dau had left her laptop at friends whom she visited earlier in the week. Had a lovely lunch at a local pub in the old town of Stevenage and then made our way back up the A1/A14, journey time was similar to the M1 run.
Just a few pics to brighten up the winter days - of African wildlife taken from the webcams over the last week.
By the way had a note from my brother's partner to say that nothing much has happened with the house and that it is still in a dreadful state. Brother is now dealing with a burst pipe (water) and has to keep turning off the water from the pavement outside. Also the bathroom wall has deteriorated. Just hope the new landlord will get his finger out and sort the mess out pretty quickly!!!
Do hope you all have a good weekend. Thinking of you all and hope those that are feeling under the weather will soon be restored to full health.

Couldn't resist - just looked at the Dunedin cam and an osprey was there
I told Dau that she was pushing her luck with this nanny. Three kids plus a dog. Yes, they now have a dog. Some sort of small terrier that looks like a rat. I dislike small yappy dogs. How does she have time to look after & train a 2 month old as well as the twins.
Evening all: Granddaughter and Ms. D fast asleep and I'm puttering for a few minutes. Went shopping with Ms. D today while g'daughter was at work - it was like having a lively octopus in tow, Busy hands into everything! Had lots of chatty time with Ms. D who at one point informed me, with much gravity, "Great-nana, you have some old skin."
Oh.
Heather: Yes, wonderment is the word. I mean, how can anyone possibly have such old skin! :-)
OG: Lemon and ginger cake - Yum! Good that J's visit to doc went well; I know nothing about statins, but seems like several folks on here have some good insight.
Lynette: Thanks for pix. Awful about your bro's house. Did the building recently sell? Wonder what is holding up the landlord...
AQ: Hope you've made it abundantly clear that any dog of any size or yap-potential is not part of your remit.
Thanks all for posts. Must settle down now. Another busy day tomorrow I suspect...
Annette: I'm so glad that you're enjoying quality time with Ms. D. :-))) I've seen a photo of you, and I think you and your skin are lovely! I'll start the thread tomorrow; it sounds like you have your hands full. LOL Hope your hotel is nice.
Lynette: Lovely screenshots. I had forgotten all about Pete's Pond. I used to enjoy it often.
AQ: Oh, dear. A dog? It's not my business, but I agree with you. The dog is pushing it.
Heather: The ancestors on my mom's side generally had long lives, but my dad's family tended to live hard and die young. They were and still are a wild lot. Not sure which genes will win in my case. LOL Glad your shower was repaired by the politely barefoot young man.
OG: Glad the paste is working so well. Wonderful news that J's hospital visit was satisfactory. I won't give an opinion, but I know statins are controversial. I hope J gets answers to all his questions.
Lindy: Thanks for the hugs. Have you tried spraying Bonnie with water to let her know not to steal things? Just a thought.
dibnlib: Hope you like your new specs. I've seen manatees in the wild. Very special creatures.
Brenda: Glad that your car was okay. Sorry your shopping was a bust, though. Thanks for your good wishes to me. Like yours, my area had high winds today. The temperature soared to 63 F or 17.2 C. I slept late, and by the time I got up the winds were gusting to 50 mph.
I was drinking my coffee, and I was hearing sirens from fire trucks and emergency personnel racing down the highway. The sirens went on for about an hour! I was afraid that the winds were fueling a big prairie fire, although I thought the ground would be too wet from the recent snow.
Turns out, in the small town down the road from me, a large industrial warehouse had caught fire and exploded! Forty fire departments from seven counties fought the blaze to contain it in the high winds. Phew! Here's the news article from a local small town paper, and here's a video. The men in the straw hats fighting the fire are from the local Amish community.
Take care, all.
Good Morning. Lots of posts in the last couple of days!
Nice to hear from Lynette. Glad your trip was successful: Love the Pete's Pond pics, I used to look on there a lot too, but am too busy now.
Annette: Still laughing about MsD's comment!
Dibnlib: Good that you got your specs sorted. I can't stand it when mine are not "right".
AQ: I'm not fond of Yappy small dogs, either. Possibly you could point out that's it far too much for you to take care of one in addition to the girls. Did she consult you before getting one? - It doesn't sound as if she did...... Don't blame you if you're very annoyed.
Diane: That was some fire - they did well to get it in hand. You don't mention how you are feeling, hope you're recovering now. Thanks for the Bonnie suggestion but she would think that was fun, LOL!!
