Osprey Chat Thread for February 2016

This thread continues from   Osprey Chat Thread for January 2016

It seems almost impossible to believe that a year has passed since I last wrote that we were in the last osprey free month of the new year. Well the clocks have been relentlessly ticking away the hours and days and the great excitement will soon start again.

The Loch Garten clock tells us to expect EJ in a mere  61 days but last year she was late so she may well beat that.

See

Last year proved to be a very frustrating one at Loch Garten but the fans enjoyed it nevertheless.

Will it prove better this year? No one knows. It  you want certainty then ospreys are not the hobby for you.

Last year Blue XD again failed to beat Odin back to Loch Garten. Worse still his breeding season was not a success and the wife may have left him.

Lots of question to be answered this year.

Of course the big news was that  Lady and 11 (98) were two of the most high profile ospreys that failed to return in 2015

Two years ago we were asking if Blue YD would come home? Well he did but unfortunately his tracker failed and we did not know if he was alive or dead. Well he is very alive and he was spotted in Africa very recently.

White 14 from Bassenthwaite did come home and totally thrilled us with his antics.

This year we are looking for   Blue UV from Kielder to come home and what a thrill that should be.

A lot of birds turned up late last year. Let us hope that they arrive earlier this year.

Here are the countdowns to the main nests.

But as always it is likely that Beatrice will lead the charge north but she is not the fastest of ospreys.

The excitement will build day by day.

  • Lake of Menteith is a good spot to see Ospreys fishing.  I assumed they are the ones (eg Drunkie) from Aberfoyle area.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Great Story Shiela. Living close to the Lake of Menteith I found the link with the Lake interesting.

As OG pointed out it is a great area to view ospreys fishing as the lake is a fishery and is stocked with 1000 to 1500 Trout every week. The lake is celebrating 50 years as a fishery this year (1966 to 2016).

Drunkie resides on Loch Ard only a few miles away but Lake of Menteith is his supermarket store amongst other ospreys that share The Trossachs.

A 2006 visitor to the lake.

The fishery opens March to October with great boat access to the Lake and look forward to seeing its summer visitors.

One of Tigers great friends Green SK used to fish here last seen and heard of around the area 2009.

Here is the first version of  my   Loch Garten Navigation Group Tool

The idea is to keep  up to date with the current threads.

I now realise that I already have a number of Index threads  which Lynette highlighted last night.

Also I have a similar tool in the osprey bulletin.

There is also a much more comprehensive archive tool in preparation.

    Tell us what you think.

Tiger - I find the sites and links you provide to us very commendable. Your Osprey Bulletin and FB Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus) is like  a regular order magazine from your newsagent - you don't want to go anywhere without it.

YES - Your Loch Garten Navigational Tool receives full approval - Thank You.

Thank you. I am finding the bulletin very useful myself as it is great for finding things over the last three  years.

I am glad you find it useful too.

  • Just wondering whether anyone else is having a problem on the forum today?  When I click on the 'forum' tab above, I find myself in the past!  There are none of the up to date threads mentioned.  I had to do a search just to find one thread I could share my angst on, and I couldn't remember the thread name where you can raise problems.

    I get this:

    Most odd.

  • No I get the up to date view.

Have you at some point gone to past pages?

  • But surely if I click 'forum' from, say, this page, it ought to bring the latest contributions, but it doesn't. I still get what I posted above.  Really odd.  Perhaps I should log out and back in again.

  • I guess the mystery as to whether Blue 24 laid an egg last year (Friends of the Ospreys vs DOP) may have been solved.

Many Thanks to Welsh Osprey for sharing this information.

Friends of the Ospreys, Have finally been able to start work for the... coming season, after all the recent rain, went to the river Dyfi, to refurb three of the nests, we started here, on the nest that blue 24 users, the nest was in a reasonable condition, and not much to do, while we were removing the grass from the nest,we discovered the remains of an egg, from the previous years, as you can see, the bigger piece of shell hasn't been in direct sunlight, and still has markings. The bits of shell where hidden in the vegetation, and carefully removed.

  • Thank you Tiger, birder, WendyBartter and Chloe for your helpful comments.  After a good night's sleep, for both laptop and me, all has reverted to the norm once more!  I have no idea what happened.

Thank you Keith for the update on the mystery of Blue 24's egg or not...   I hope she returns and has a successful year this season.  Is there any news of her mate?  Clearly it is not Dai Dot.  I also thought it interesting that there are three nests in the Dyfi Valley.  With more going up around the Glaslyn area this part of the country will be a wonderful stronghold for increasing numbers of osprey.

  • Shiela FE - According to the original post back in 2015 reference Blue 24 her mate left her and she had to abandon the eggs as he had his own nest and his eggs were about to hatch any day. Now leave you to be the detective.

DOP denied that Blue 24 had laid eggs but it now appears egg shells have been found in the nest Blue 24 uses.

    Blue 24

Blue 24, an Osprey on one of the nests in mid Wales, Managed to lay eggs but was unsuccessful, she mated with a bird from another nest nearby but could only manage 6 days of incubation , She then had to leave the nest to feed herself, the male bird that she mated with had his own nest, with eggs that was expecting to hatch any day, It will happen for this great bird one day, maybe next year. The pull to this nest is the male bird nearby who she knows has been successful in breeding. Clearly she is really hoping she can muscle in on that nest, being exactly what she did before that female arrived and the moment she left on migration!
