Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 5 July 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

I hope everyone is safe from the bad weather in the U.K.

Margo: Sorry it was so frightful for you.

Clare: Congratulations on your new opportunity at Minsmere. Enjoy!

Brenda: Sorry you lost your match with the men folks. :-) I'm sure your new roses are lovely.

Lindy: I hope you enjoy your time in Wales.

Annette: So glad you all had such a nice day at the beach.

Heather: I hope things are improving for your family in France.

AQ: I've enjoyed looking at your photos. I like the Koroit Library, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and the Portland Tram; also, I want to live in the little Kalangadoo Church with the green roof! Very lovely.

You might be interested in seeing this old Catholic church near me: see here and here. Built in 1886, it stands in the rustic, restored 19th century Billie Creek Village in Parke County. Also, here's the historic old Log Church, built in 1871, in what is now Turkey Run State Park/Forest near me.

Hello to everyone. I hope this post makes sense. My neighbors are blasting off huge fireworks. They terrify me. I hope they don't set the woods on fire. Poor, poor wildlife. I hate July 4th.

  • Ha ha, LINDY. I'm still not quite au fait with my smartphone. We can't all be good at everything.

Just been exchanging texts with stepson who is piloting the massive liner, Britannia, in the Firth of Forth. Apparently Mary Berry and James Martin are giving cooking demos this afternoon. He asked me if he should go... Told him it would be a waste of their time and anyway, who would 'drive the boat and keep the pointy bit in the right direction'. Just to annoy him, he's always trying to teach me correct nautical terminology.

We are off to Aberdeen area, tomorrow for the wedding.OH has decided against wearing the kilt, he has shrunk a bit in height with age and whatever and the kilt is now too long. Needs remaking but he has got a bit fed up of the buckles, belts etc etc. It is a bit of a palaver getting him into it all.

  • LOL HEATHER! I would do the same, re the terminology..... I would love to go to those cookery demos, though. Enjoy yourselves in Aberdeen, hope the wedding goes smoothly. Shame about the kilt, though - I do love to see a man in a kilt. One of our son's friends got married in a kilt and he looked wonderful in the photos.
  • It's been strangely cloudy here, if you know what I mean! Put some laundry out this morning but not all of it, then waited to see - my OH was only two miles away and he said it poured down for ten minutes. However, it only darkened here so I put out the rest of it after lunch. We had a sparse lunch, feeling hungry, as my OH has been busily making strawberry jam with our fruit, the allotment was groaning when we returned from Wales. The smell of the jam cooking was just wonderful!
  • Is anyone following the news? Trading has been suspended on the New York Stock Exchange! They're calling it a technical issue, but no details have been given. The Dow had dropped 226 points this morning before trading was suspended, but that shouldn't have been enough of a loss to cause an automatic shut down.

The BBC is now reporting that The Wall Street Journal website has also gone down. In addition, all United Airlines flights worldwide were grounded this morning, due to a technical issue.

  • Thanks Diane. That is very interesting, I await further news.

  • Morning all:

Diane: See that the NYSE is still down - they're reporting an internal problem rather than a cyber breach - at least that's the current explanation. Just accessed the WSJ website with no problem.  Apparently, UAL had the same problem in early June.

Heather: How exciting to be piloting the Britannia (who owns it these days?).  Are Berry and Martin doing demos on board the liner or onshore? Have fun tomorrow - I bet men don't fret about wedding outfits as much as women. (Wonder what kind of fascinator you'd wear with a kilt....)

Lindybird: I have a shortcut to the iPhone Owners Manual on my desktop for quick reference; trouble is I'm never at my computer when I get in a pickle with it.  Somehow ended up with a video of the inside of my pocket during the July 4 celebrations - sigh.

Clare: Do let us know how Helen is doing and - easy for me to say - try not to worry.  Hugs to you.

Granddaughter and Ms. D out the door and on the road at 3:20 this morning!  Eeek. I was up to make coffee and toast. They made good time to Blythe and should be home in another couple of hours, in time for lunch.  I plan to do Not Much the rest of the day and, thank heaven, have lots of Chinese leftovers for dinner tonight.

  • Annette: I don't trust my government to admit it if the issue is cyber terrorism. I find that to be a suspicious series of coincidences, especially given the current global volatility and instability (Chinese market collapse, the Greece situation, tense Iran talks...).

  • DIANE you are on the ball regarding global issues. I am going to have a looksee, didn't know about the NYSE.

  • If I didn't listen to BBC World radio, DIANE,I would not know about these things, especially the Chinese stock market collapse. Apparently many many people there have lost all their savings because they invested. I gather more private investors than public?
