Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 5 July 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

I hope everyone is safe from the bad weather in the U.K.

Margo: Sorry it was so frightful for you.

Clare: Congratulations on your new opportunity at Minsmere. Enjoy!

Brenda: Sorry you lost your match with the men folks. :-) I'm sure your new roses are lovely.

Lindy: I hope you enjoy your time in Wales.

Annette: So glad you all had such a nice day at the beach.

Heather: I hope things are improving for your family in France.

AQ: I've enjoyed looking at your photos. I like the Koroit Library, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and the Portland Tram; also, I want to live in the little Kalangadoo Church with the green roof! Very lovely.

You might be interested in seeing this old Catholic church near me: see here and here. Built in 1886, it stands in the rustic, restored 19th century Billie Creek Village in Parke County. Also, here's the historic old Log Church, built in 1871, in what is now Turkey Run State Park/Forest near me.

Hello to everyone. I hope this post makes sense. My neighbors are blasting off huge fireworks. They terrify me. I hope they don't set the woods on fire. Poor, poor wildlife. I hate July 4th.

  • Lindybird - delightful pic.

Clare - do hope Helen won't be too long before she is back to her old self. Take care all of you.

Heather - enjoy the wedding, just read about the kilt. What a shame I do love seeing men in their kilts.  Our minister is Scottish and borrowed his brother's kilt for his wedding. He recently showed us all a photo in church (I must say it was relating to a talk) and he looked a handsome fella.

Also the government have advised all Britons not to go to Tunisia as the situation has become quite volotile - they say there could be another attack on British citizens.

I'm surprised any Westerners are there at all.  Tragic for the country - it sounded like a wonderful destination and the city of Carthage is a significant historic site.  I hate to think what ISIS would do to it if they got the chance.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Margo - so lovely to see you have managed to post.  You are being a real stalwart and keeping going as best you can. At least Billie is keeping you company whilst OH is working.  God Bless.

  • We've been to Tunisia and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. They rely on tourism to help their economy so it is going to be a real blow to them.  We went on a two day tour down to the South of the country, visiting the edge of the Kalahari and going across one of the biggest salt lakes. Also the historical sites, perhaps not all of them as you can't fit everything in.

  • We went to Tunisia, admittedly over 30 years ago. We just had a three day break, staying in Monastir, which is along the coast from Sousse. We enjoyed it, going to the colourful markets and having a day trip to see the ruins of Carthage, which was full of atmosphere and ancientness, even though there are not many buildings left standing now. I did feel that the people there were divided in their welcomes, though - some did not seem friendly and I was glad to be staying in a Westernised hotel.
  • Nice to hear from you, Margo. Thinking of you every day.
  • Whoops!  It's tomorrow now, and I'm still here.....  waited up for my OH who has been out.  Better get ourselves off to bed.

  • I collected my lovely car this morn. It was ready yesterday but OH & loan car were on nanny duty until late. It is so nice to have a friendly familiar vehicle again. Now for its overdue service – that takes up one of my free mornings next week. And after that my anti-inflams for “not-too-bad” knee require another script. Never a dull moment in this exciting life I lead. Meanwhile I am getting to bed very late. The Tour de France usually finished 1-1.30 am. I knit to the speed of the cyclists LOL and I’ve almost finished Dau’s sleeveless jacket. Tomorrow expecting 12 C. Plus a slight chance of light snow shower on higher peaks of Adelaide Hills. Any snow usually melts as soon as it falls. Sunny day here now. Should I visit the garden or let the weeds enjoy the sunshine?

  • Good morning, all.  I'm pleased to say Helen is feeling a bit better and has gone to school today.  Fingers crossed she'll have a reasonable day.

  • Good Morning, Everyone. Dry here but not bright yet, as promised by the weather girl. My OH is outside, whizzing around the tops of the hedges to keep them tidy. By the way, the front hedge we planted last year is now looking good - he cut the top off each little tree to make them bush out, as recommended, and its all growing nicely. We put a very large tall tub at the end of the row - a "full stop" I said, and I planted it up with various small things, plus a fuchsia which is now dripping down at the side: we're very pleased. Now we look smart from the roadside!
