SUMMERTIME - and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the Flowers are high
One of these mornin's
You're gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread your wing's
And you'll take to the sky.
Your post is thought provoking as always, Keith.
When Breagha first did not move on I decided then & there that he had reached his summer home. I still hold to that.
In spite of LG's stated reason for not tagging this season, I believe that we still have MUCH to learn about osprey migration patterns. All your questions need & deserve answers.
IF the backpack endangers the osprey is another matter. Another question, IMO, to which we have no answer and for which we desperately need answers.
Good afternoon June and Keith. I really hope that is not the case with Blue YD :( These people should be punished severely including landowners. It could be that he just has not been spotted it must be difficult to spot a arial sometimes at least I hope that is the case.
I hope you will get to see "our little hero" when you are next in Bioko island. I think you can count Scotland as another country! That makes 31!
I often wondered about the "missing presumed dead" have in fact returned to Norway or Sweden to breed? Maybe just wishful thinking but these birds prove us wrong time and time again LOL! After all our dear Odin hails from Norway (Ithink)
I dont believe White14 was LOST, but was cruising to searcg out the future perfect site? Decided to go home instead (and so pleased he did)
58Willow - Very interesting few lines - It is well known that ospreys that have started life in Scotland end up in Norway and Sweden.
An osprey ringed in Perthshire in 1984 was recovered in Sweden at Lake Viksjon four years later.
At 4 years of age this bird could easily have been breeding in Sweden.
Not sure about Odin being from Norway - I spoke to Richard about this a few years back and he said its a good story.
White 14 - I underestimated White 14 - I used to say he is lost but maybe he has outwitted me and was only doing what ospreys do when they are young - Explore and knew the way home to The Lakes. He has an interesting area to explore now The Lakes - Kielder to his east and not far north Dumfries and Galloway all with ospreys and nests and am sure will become a pest to nesting adults and friends of the young maybe.
From my experiences down the South of Bioko I think he will not be used to being chased off as most young do in Senegal and Guinea so a visit to a nest may result in a new experience for him.
Good News Yesterday from Rutland.
In 2013 two young 3 year olds 11(2010) and 25(2010) paired off and nested at Site C and had three chicks that year all fledged and migrated.
On of these 4K(2013) was spotted by the Field Officer intruding at a nest close by on Friday.
This is the third from a 2013 brood from what is regarded as Rutland Nests that has been spotted home as two year olds.
1J and 3J were the others both from Manton Bay - 5R last chicks and both offspring of the present female at Manton Bay known as Maya.
I used to live in the North of England and walked the North Yorkshire Moors frequently. We would come across dead birds of prey on a fairly regular basis, too frequently to be due to natural causes. Your suggestion that Blue YD may have met his demise at the hand of landowners/gamekeepers would ring true with what I have seen. Very sad if true.
here is that train I hear all the time, photo captured from above video
See the bunny rabbit? a juvenile, I think' He scattered as soon as I quietly and carefully slid the door open an inch or two.
Willlow. thought you might enjoy these recent shots of some of my gardening efforts.
