Hallo all!
Diane: Eek. A mattress in a corner of a wooden-frame house surrounded by trees doesn't sound like an equal match for a tornado. Do you have a hardhat handy? Hope the warning system is improved (at least a bit) from your Mom's day. Here, they're installing very sensitive equipment up and down California that will give us - oh - 10 seconds maybe? - advance warning of an earthquake, but am wondering how long it would take that warning to arrive on my phone, etc.. I keep telling my sister in the UK that our houses have wood frames that do hold up pretty well to those stresses, but she said she was worried less about that than fires started by gas/electric damage. Oh joy. Maybe we should both decamp to the UK, where rain seems to be the biggest problems (apart from those very nasty floods), but we could surely find a house on a hill.... I can handle going up a ladder, but as to what I should do once up there, not so sure about that! Spread out a tarp? :-)
Lindybird: Vests? I remember bodices. :-) They have things here call camis (short for camisoles) that are worn mostly under sheer summer tops. And then there are those thermal leggings and long-sleeve fleecy/silk/whatever tops skiers, etc. wear as an extra layer.
Heather: Ha! Some weeks back I made the observation that I was wearing the same summer clothes from last year (winter clothes will last forever at this rate).
Off to start the day.
DIANE I've been thinking about you on and off all day! I can't get the picture out of my mind, the mattress in the corner and you behind it. But truly, I wouldn't have thought of that.( And then my mind went to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz...) So glad that you are OK but sorry about the roof leak. I hope that it won't be too big a job. I wonder if you have inspected your land yet, trees etc.
ANNETTE may be thinking about liberty bodices which we discussed here a few years ago, I think! Horrible things. Shows our age:-(
Better weather here today, BRENDA. OH was bowling this morning, came home very happy because his team won.We have spent all afternoon gardening and only fell out once, over something that I hacked back in order to plant a new alstromeria (can't spell it).
Scampi, chips and salad for dinner and to bed fairly early,I think. Let us hope for another good gardening day tomorrow.
Take care, all.
LINDY At a fancy dress party many years ago someone very heavily pregnant wore a T shirt and on the front it said "I'VE HAD A " she turned round and the back said "CLOSE ENCOUNTER" all very appropriate as the film had recently been released. I went as Aunt Sally (Worzel Gummidge) and OH was a Rubik cube.
Hi, LYNETTE. Between Preston and Chorley (until tomorrow morning, then to Wales) – but I did think of you when we went through Worsley on the way into Manchester last month! Well done your daughter doing her 10k!
DIANE – sorry the roof has been leaking again. Do take care fixing it yourself!
LINDA – heard that Hen Harrier news this morning – tragic. I also see that Glaslyn report one of their Osprey “chicks” (from 2009, I think) was nesting in the Lake District and has gone missing – “unknown cause” – and his partner has had to abandon the nest and eggs to go fishing for herself.
BRENDA – I too haven’t worn a vest since school days, but I wear several layers of tops at times!
ANNETTE – tarpaulin not much help in storms – even temp roof came off Dau#2’s house after the actual roof!
HEATHER – pleased to read of the gardening weather and joint effort!
We had a great day visiting WWT Martin Mere; much changed since previous visits. Not just UK birds (resident, migrant and passing through) but also collections of waterbirds from each continent. OH collected his new scope, but still can’t digiscope as on part of the camera attachment had not arrived; however he was very pleased to get some trade-in value on his old kit! Some birds had young, including little stripey Humbug-like Shellduck, which were so cute. During a large part of our tour around, there was a female Mallard who was determined to accompany my scooter wherever I went! We were able to eat lunch outside, but I had to wear a jacket much of the day, due to a cool wind. After we left, there was a heavy rain storm over this area, it stopped as we reached our dinner destination.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Brenda – I’m adding some stained glass windows over next few days. (A few at a time, so I have enough photos to last the months when I don’t escape!)
Heather – We put people in “boxes”, forgetting they lived elsewhere. SA claims Mary Mackillop and I knew she died in Sydney, I should not have been surprised to find her at Portland & Hamilton. Yesterday I posted pics of a Portland college that began in Mary Mackillop’s family home, Bayview House. By chance I had already planned this & today’s pics before I read your post. Today there is a window dedicated to Mary’s father who died & is buried in Hamilton.
Lynette – I had to Google Uki as I’d never heard of it. Your friends have a big trip.
Diane – I saw some tornado-flattened house on TV, I guess a leaky roof is fine.
Linda – I’m glad you only took “some” clothes off. <grin> Our weather has become cooler, expecting 16 C today. Miss3, who doesn’t feel the cold and would run around in t-shirt & sockless if her mum didn’t intervene, was surprised to find I had another layer (t-shirt) under my jumper.
Yesterday was Queens birthday holiday, s-i-l at home, but I helped for few hours to give them a break. MissL has decided to go for a single day nap (still wakes in night). Dau wailed ‘when am I going to give her lunch?’ She had just managed to get the twins more or less synchronised with naps & feeds and a chance her herself to have an afternoon rest. I was so tired last night I was in bed before 8. Off to visit Coffee-Friend this morn. Look at the time I’d better get a move on.
Evening all: Busy day, moderately successful. Off to meet daughter for breakfast in the morning (haven't done that for a while).
Heather: Why were they called liberty bodices (uh oh - I see a Google moment - hang on!). OK, so they were invented in Leicestershire in 1908 (waaaay before our time) but by the 1950s they were used just to keep us - ahem - people warm (ah the days before central heating).
OG: Sounds like you guys are having a lovely trip; hope any rain holds off while you're out and about.
AQ: I heard that kiddies and young adults have brown fat cells that enable them to cavort around skimpily clad without feeling the cold.
Hallo to everyone else! Have a good Tuesday all.
OG Glad to head you are enjoying your hols and still have Wales to look forwarf to. Hope EEs extras arrive soon.
Good Morning Everyone. a grey cloudy morning, with the odd glimmer of the sun. 14c. The wind is cold. We had a slight frost last night.
AQ, I will keep checking on your photographs. Thank you.I am sure you enjoyed your break with your coffee friend, away from the very active granddaughters :-)) You must have been exhausted, that you were in bed before 8pm. I do wonder if I could cope with two babies, these days.
Annette, I presume that meeting your daughter for breakfast, lasts at least a few hours :-))
Linda, Definitely not warm enough to wear shorts, here, this morning, but I am sure your OH will enjoy his game of golf. Maybe the sun has appeared in Cheshire :-))
OG, Pleased to hear that you are having such a good holiday. Enjoy Wales and Dyfi.
