THE LG OSPREY GABFEST FOR APRIL 2015

Bleeding hearts. Retired Mountain Lady; Osprey, RSPB cam, Shower, My wish wordpress

  • Strathallan - Maybe today may be my last visit as it spoilt the day on the way home. It is so disappointing to witness what is happening.

After removing the cherry picker it went back up again and also sonic bird scarers that appear to have worked. The birds who returned seem to have gone - not only from their home but also any chance of settling on the newly built nest. I think this was a token effort as no way will they settle on the new nest with the sonic scarers still so close.

The ROBERTS and DF CONCERTS appear to have won and chased off these birds.

  • Thanks, Keith.  I am still disgusted by what has been allowed to happen at Strathallan.  Can't think why there was no prohibitive intervention there.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG - The SNH had the decency to address the situation with me and published the set of rules for intervention in Scotland which do differ from England. Apparantly the bird has to be in the nest and I emphasise IN. Well these birds were not allowed to go in the nest.

The sister of the owners of Strathallan are as much to blame - if they had allowed errection of a new nest on their land away from the original nest it may have worked but for a family feud.

However this is not mitigation for the other wildlife The Kingfishers whose nest banking is netted and the otters whos swimways are blocked and the owls and bats as well as ancient woodland destroyed.

I am also disappointed in the Perthshire Ospey Orthonoligist who has gone along with the whole situation - he will be out ringing Ospreys in July as the Good Samaritan.

  • Sadly money talks...

Just my opinion but in my area with windfarm expansion the RSPB had just gone along with their guidelines against other expert opinion ..

    Membership in doubt..

  • Two GREAT reports, keith. my sympathies re Strathallan situation. othr than that, it is a local matter best that I stay out of.

  • As for the grand old LADY, I just hope she has faded peacefully into the gloaming. IMO she shouldn't have to be fighting for her home and mate at this stage of her long and glorious existence.

  • but I like having reports & opinions re Strathallan on gabfest.

  • JUNE - OH SHE WOULD NOT HAVE TO FIGHT.

If she appeared on the Loch tomorrow I am afraid the Lover would be off and His Highness would do as he is told.

This was a big discussion point with many at the nest today - However the longer these two bond then maybe the female would put up a fight like we saw at Dyfi last season between Females Blue 12 and Blue 24.

Also the big discussion and there were differing opinions all speculation of course amongst staff is whether she would retire in the sun.

Some say the trigger to do a 3000 mile journey to breed and if she has passed that point may not get a trigger to return.

Others say that whilst she is on the wind she would always return.

    We just do not know.

  • Speculation is fascinating. Much yet to learn. We desire, even yearn to know, yet the mystery gives romance, mystic, je ne sais quoi.   Just another reason we find osprey fascinating & love them so much.

  • Good morning all on this beautiful Easter morning. Thankyou Keith for sharing your beautiful photos of the new female and dear Laddie. Wish this pair the best of luck and should Lady not return hope they are successful in rearing a family.

I think Lady will not return this year, but i thought this last year and she did return amazingly. She is a extraordinary bird thats for sure! JUNE, i love what you said. "fading peacefully into the gloaming"
