Weekly Chat (all topics) Sunday, April 18. 2010

Hi all: Don't forget to check last few comments of last week's chat and a lovely photo from OG - of Loch Garten I assume. Alan: Wonderful close up of EJ on the last Daily Update. Thanks to everyone else for all the news from far and wide.

Just in from Earth Day event, which had a lot more transportation (electric/natural gas, etc) options on display this year, including bikes of all shapes and sizes (SB is a big bike town with lots of bike paths, even throughout downtown).  Spoke to a friend of a friend there who is setting up a raptor rescue center at the Natural History Museum; also the California Condor group who are trying to figure out how to set up a live cam at the condor feeding station in the back country. They're thinking maybe solar power, but then there's the problem of relaying the signal, etc.  If that's successful, they may try one at the nesting sites, but the problem is that condors don't nest in trees - they like caves, so a logistical hurdle for further down the road. Not to mention the "permit" hurdles, which are major given that the condors are still highly endangered.  In addition to the usual solar, green, organic farms, foods and other community display booths there was the usual band and "green" gifts area. Didn't buy anything but did visit my friend with his spiffy electric car and bumped into another friend - a "Master Gardener" at another booth where we sat and chatted for an hour.

All quiet on the LG and LOTL nests right now; doesn't look windy or wet.

  • On a local news show this evening they had a very brief interview with a woman who had a Harris Hawk - unusual in that they apparently hunt in groups. I'm sure a lot of bloggers knew that (not me).

When I re-read the posts, realized I'd referred to Diane's "spectacled" bears as"bespeckled"  bears.  When I went to the link last night, I couldn't figure out why they were called "bespeckled."  See what a night out does....

LOL, Annette. I don't think the bears cared. I just love those bears! Billie Jean, the mama, sure has her hands -- er, paws -- full with those twins. They are just little bundles of energy, exploring everything, and looking for trouble everywhere. I watched them some today, and they made me laugh out loud. I wish someone would give them some toys. I know that wouldn't be "natural," but they would love them. LOL

I know how you feel about re-reading posts. The other day I realized that I'd used "effect" instead of "affect" in a note to you. I spent 2 hours obsessing about my editing skills going to heck. :-)

Sounds like you had a busy day again. I like to paint, but hate the preparation (filling holes, affixing painter's tape...). Wish I had someone to do that part for me. So glad you had a nice time last night.

    This news is for Diane:

Indy site is reporting this morning that #4 has hatched so a full house for Kathy Q and Kinney!

Yay, K-team!!! If I remember correctly (that's a big "if" these days, LOL), KathyQ and Kinney raised four chicks to fledging last year. They are good parents, so they have every chance of being successful. Lots of volunteers will help keep the young safe. Thanks, Alan!

Diane : Yet to check out the Spectacled bear. Is that one that WENT to Specsavers?

LOL!!! They do look like they're wearing specs!

  • I have a fit if I make a grammatical/syntax error (which I'm sure I do more and more) and don't catch it.  Editors (even former editors) aren't supposed to be making those kinds of mistakes!  :-)  Today wasn't too bad; was nice to be around the house and making progress on house-type things.   I've beenwatching The Pacific on HBO.  Great production about the U.S. involvement in that area during WWII; very realistic - brutally so - but overall very well done.

  • Have just noticed that on the LOTL site they're asking for pledges (or donations) for a John O'Groats to Lands End trek by one of their volunteers in an effort to raise funds to satellite track at least one of their chicks.  I haven't noticed that before.

  • I just noticed that, too, Annette. I was reading on another site that people are starting to call Marge's significant other by the name "Mac". I don't think it's an official name, because LotL doesn't name the birds. Not sure where the name originated. Better than "her boyfriend", I guess. Mac and Marge has a nice ring to it. :-)

  • Was also looking at Phoebe's web site and saw that she's rebuilding her nest (have missed a lot of news so not sure what happened to the old one - unless she's just restoring the original).  Anyway, it's just past 10 and I'm going to call it a night.  Take care all. Have a nice Saturday.

  • The story about "polyospreys" is coming on BBC1 soon.
