Morning all; All quiet on nests so far with EJ and Marge snoozing.
And it is raining at LG.
I think they should name the first chick Ejaydin ( EJ and (O) din.
That would be a fine name for a male or female
What do you think?
Formerly known as Barbara Jean
Hey Barbara Jean: I see EJ is having a little sit on the side of the nest - the image is unclear but she looks a bit bedraggled. Wonder what's got her attention out there.... oh she's settling back down again.
Hmmm. Some other folks have been coming up with names too. I'm really bad at stuff like that. Will have to think about it - don't they tend to give them names associated with the area?
Have to go rustle up dinner (unfortunately Margobird, OH will not go for beans on toast) :-)
It has been raining for hours . Fortunately her feathers are water repellent . Plus yesterday , while Odin was sitting on the egg, I saw her have a lengthy preen to oil them up. So other than being a bit cold she should be OK
I wonder how often they "oil them up." Do they sense the approach of wet weather? Good thing they're prepared; spending the night outside on a pile of wet moss doesn't appeal to me.
Someone explained last year ( I think) that they have an oil gland at the base of their tail and they take oil from that gland and disperse it along their feathers to water proof them. I don't know how often they preen , but it seems to be quite often.
Someone - can't remember who; it was during the "how do they do it" chat, mentioned the "preening" gland in the last day or so. EJ up and sitting at the side of the nest again; having a little stretch. No change at LOTL.
Hi Barbara and Annette. It was me who mentioned the preening gland just recently. Ospreys are in the water every day to get fish, so their feathers need to be waterproof. If I remember correctly, last year there was a link to a picture and account of a rescue of an osprey who had had a tussle with a fish which was too big for him. He had been in the water too long and was in trouble because he had got waterlogged.
Smiles, Jan.
Hey Wattle: Thanks for the reminder.
Still all quiet on the osprey front (both nests).
Marge just up and stretching; still quiet everywhere.
Both EJ and Marge awake and looking around expectantly.....
