Daily Update (LG Nest) Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Hallo all: Off we go for another day.  Huh. That's unusual. EJ (I assume) is on the nest; just sitting with her back to the cam.

  • Just heard a little song bird Tish.   Piping away  . EJ keeping a silent vigil for a change. Going to be out a lot today but it's good to say 'hello' everyone and I'll be keeping in touch throughout the day hoping to read fish reports.

Tiger: I think you just posted a response to Chrisy B on yesterday's thread.  You might want to copy it over here so she'll see it?

Odin will not help EJ defend against another female. He will only defend against a male intruder.

After all if EJ were to lose then he would just pair off with the winner. They are pragmatic.

In 2004 EJ in her first season was attacked relentlessly each morning by an intruding female. Henry did nothing to defend EJ against her.

In the end a broken egg appeared. It was not clear which osprey had laid the broken egg, EJ or the intruding female. In the event EJ went on to lay three more eggs and eventually fledged three chicks.

Thanks for your insight Tiger. That does make sense, and so then it is when there are eggs/chicks that they both  together 'repel all boarders' .  :-)

  • I AM by the east coat Cirrus and often hear curlews crying.  t's a spooky sound.

  • EJ on her nest squealing for Odin.  It looks a very overcast and windy day at LG!!

No I do not think it matters if there are eggs or not. It was in April 2001 that EJ evicted the wife of OVS and then laid 3 eggs. However these eggs were lost to pine martens. See bottom of page 22 "Life of Ospreys"

However EJ suffered the same fate in 2003 when she was ousted when attacked by a female with a green ring and the eggs were broken. Then on the 16th June 2003 she turned up at Loch Garten and the great saga of Henry and EJ began.  See page  24 "Life of Ospreys"

It is not clear whether the bird which evicted EJ was the same bird that became OVS' new wife (green 7B). but I think it probably was.

Now Green 7B herself is very interesting in that she is a grandaughter of Ollie the legendary male at Loch Garten from 1990 to 2001. Green 7B herself turned up at Loch Garten in 2005 (I think) and for a short time there were worries that she might do the double on EJ.

For details of the great attacks of 2004 can be read at http://www.osprey2005.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/LochGarten2004.pdf
