Start of a new day at Loch Garten
Tiger Signature
Just to re-cap what occured earlier this evening (have reviewed the recording - not got time to include pictures unfortunately).
19:15 Odin brought in a decent sized fish. EJ greedily grabbed it and flew off. Almost immediately there were corvids about (can clearly be heard - one must have been right by the micophone!).
19:23 EJ returns with the half-eaten fish and there is an almighty tussle which Odin wins. EJ leaves, followed 2 minutes later by Odin clearly with fish in talons.
19:32 EJ returns and within 3 minutes starts mantling. This continues for another 3 minutes culminating in an intruding osprey landing on the left of the nest (appeared to be an un-ringed male, though not a great view in truth). Both left almost immediately.
Dear Sandy. I'm not sure about your re-cap. No-one else has mentioned an intruder at 7.30ish and although I was making dinner at the time, I find this odd. Feel free to correct. I observed EJ and Odin on the nest most of the day untl 6pm before which there were no intruders but Odin does not seem the male he was last year as observed by several others on the forums. He has not been supplying fish in plentiful quantities. I have raised the question that perhaps the fish are not readily available because of the harsh winter and am happy to give him time even though I am a little concerned about his behaviour in the run up to egg-laying time.....Emma
Hi Emma. I was just about to post re: the alleged intruder and will now modify it to answer your points.
Back in a couple of minutes!
Hello again Emma.
This is a pic of "alleged" intruder. EJ was mantling furiously for the very brief period that this osprey was on the nest.
I'm fairly convinced that this is not Odin.
I read your point about the fish and although, like you, I'm no expert in these matters it seems perfectly reasonable to me. It probably wouldn't affect the fish farm at Rothiemurchus, but then we know that Odin tends not to fish there.
Please let me know what you think about the photo.
no problem Sandy - we could be the only ones around which is unusual indeed eerie....
Emma, here is another one:
To be honest I'm less interested in the inconclusive images of the "intruder" here - more EJ's reaction to it. If EJ thinks that it's not Odin, and she clearly doesn't, then it's good enough for me.
Hope I get this reply in before someone starts a new daily thread. Sandy - it is difficult to make out what is happening given the blurriness of the screenshot. Wish I had seen it. David gave assurances yesterday that there was no third osprey around…...Maybe there will be an update in the morning….Emma.
Not a cheep from LG. All quiet and no birds to be seen. Time to call it a night. Catch you all tomorrow.
