Happy Easter all!

OK. So EJ and Odin safely at LG, but what has happened to the LOTL cam. Haven't been able to get anything. It looks like it's going to load okay, then you get just a black screen.  Let's hope they get it sorted soon. Margobird said they'd had horrible weather there yesterday, so maybe that knocked out something.

Well, I missed Odin's arrival but thanks to BigRab, there's a video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4EoYaRO6js which I plan to watch myself in a minute.

Busy day here, also amazed to see Trucker cam is now in Albuquerque - boy! does that guy ever cover ground. So I really have to follow him tomorrow (along with you-know-who) because I've driven that road and just love the huge wide horizons. But it's also Easter, so a bit of family stuff going on. Bought some lovely strawberries from the farm down the road and then went to supermarket and bought some naughty cheese (fattening double cream French Brie), mushrooms stuffed with all kinds of yummy stuff and simply couldn't turn down Haagen Dazs's invite to try - "at special introduction price" - new Java Chip flavor with coffee and chocolate chips. Was at Costco earlier and got some great asparagus and Wild Alaska Halibut. So we had a nice dinner, but ice cream still unopened - for now.

  • Hi All:   Enjoyed the 'Vermilion Cliffs' video earlier - what fun, to see where other people travel.

Sorry to hear about the disaster at the West Virginia Coal Mine, thankfully these things are rarer these days, but it is so awful for their families and friends.

A happy Hamish, Alan!   Ours ran about, not helping at all, as we donned our jackets and gardening gloves this morning to cut back a very large eucalyptus tree which dominates the border. We love it because it has little shivering leaves and they are green all year, but it gets so large we can't control it if we don't cut it back quite viciously at least every 3rd year. Husband went up the ladder and sawed at it, I dodged the falling branches and gathered them up. Trip to the local Tip on the agenda now.

    Have a wonderful trip, OG!

  • Those proud soon -to- be parents, the Milford Ospreys!  Lovely pic, Alan.

  • Just taken a quick swoop through all cams, blogs, chats, news, weather forecast … .   About to shut down PC and finish packing as far as we can tonight, to throw remainder in car and leave as early as possible Wednesday morning.  Thanks for all the good wishes.  I am not going to promise to read all I miss after eight days, in fact I don’t think I’ll even try – so keep well all, good watching, enjoy your chats and I’ll be joining in again Thursday next week!

Remember this one?  “Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonders where the birdies is?  The bird is on the wing – no, that’s absurd, the wing is on the bird.”

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

Diane: I'm just wondering if there wasn't a temporary problem with the ISP provider that's been sorted out.  Yesterday I couldnt' even get Google Maps to work.  We'll see.     So your Dad was shouting at the telly? Assume he was on Butler's side? Sounds like they just missed a great triumph. What a shame, I love to see the underdog unseat the favorite, regardless of the sport.   Now it's what? Baseball?  But hey, just three months to Wimbledon (Note to self: Must get that flat screen telly in by then!)

This is my last technology post. Sorry everyone. I appreciate your patience. :-)

    Hey, Annette.

You can always confirm that your connection speed is as fast as your provider plan promised. At this site, you can click a button and test your download speed, upload speed, and ping speed. This is an FCC government site, so I presume it's safe (yeah, like I really trust the government!).     http://www.broadband.gov/qualitytest/about/     The result will be in kilobytes. If you want to convert to megabytes, here's a converter: http://easycalculation.com/bandwidth-calculator.php     My own speed is a sad 2.64 megabytes per second, but it's sufficient for me to watch webcams, TV programs, music videos, etc. I rarely have any trouble.

On a related topic, I have the March 2010 issue of Consumer Reports (someone gave it to my Dad). Almost the entire issue is dedicated to explaining and rating all of the different types of televisions, including internet-enabled TVs (that show birdie webcams -- yay!). It seems pretty complete, although I don't know how unbiased. I wish I could send it to you. You can probably get it at your library, though.

Oh, yeah, Dad was for Butler. He hates Duke and has sworn at them for 2 weeks. I reserve my swearing for politicians! LOL

  • I might have missed you original goldfinch but have a good break and what a lovely photograph.

    Margobird

  • Hope you are still there OG. Have a great holiday.

  • Alan  Fantastic I am so glad that someone must have stepped and provided the £6000 that this site needed to get a cam up and running. . This pair are two of the world's most charismatic ospreys. They believe in giving the chicks toys. The female also tends to lay four eggs and in 2008 four chicks fledged from the nest.

  • Hi all: Bet I missed OG. Boo. But OG, if you're up super early and can't resisit a quick read, have a great trip.

Diane!  How wonderful. Thanks again. I've copied and pasted all that info and will try it out, probably in the next day or two. We subscribe to Consumer Reports (for UK folks, it's our version of Which?) and have already been through that issue and the previous one (last year) where they covered a lot of the same turf. Also have read a lot of stuff on the web (probably too much). Not sure about an internet-enabled TV...... do I have to read a book to find out how to work it every time I want to change the channel, etc.?  Hmmm.

Alan: Those Milford ospreys look awfully well-groomed and upmarket compared to our windblown duo.

Tiger:  Wow. That looks to be some viewing. I'll dig up the trajectory on that other site and will try to summon the willpower to trundle outside and see what's up there, even though it's a tad early. As you say, the opportunity for a double sighting probably isn't going to be around much longer, especially since they'll be retiring the Shuttle.  Thanks so much for the info.

Sun is out so off to do stuff with cars and garage stuff. Take care ALL!

  • I'll add my probably-too-late best wishes to OG for the trip, you'll be seeing Odin bring loads of fish as EJ will be stuck to the nest by the time you get there!

  • Are the Milford Ospreys, here in the UK?  Is i it Milford Haven we are talking about Alan?  If so that 's very quick work isn't it?
