Happy new year, everyone! The lovely Emyr has posted a new blog.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
It does sound as though they have been seriously busy over the autumn and winter - not only bringing out that fantastic calendar and book but promising proper toilets and disabled access to the top of the Observatory. I think it's going to be my New Year's resolution to get there with Limpy this year.
Thank you Clare, Happy New Year to you both and good luck with your resolution.
Birdies LG DU update.
Has anyone worked out what year at Loch Garten that Iolo was talking about? I think I know but will leave it for a bit.
Tiger Signature
I would take a guess at 1973. Female didn't arrive until 26 April and she was a new female. :-)

Additionally -
It was good to hear that Mr Williams had been watching ospreys pass through and even a pair hanging around Wales only a few years later. There probably was not a nest building programme as early as that to encourage settlement in Wales.
Roy Dennis mentions visiting Wales in the 1970s and talking with the RSPB regional officer for Wales about the possibility of ospreys breeding in Wales. He did build a couple of artificial nests in the 1990s and later worked on a Rutland style translocation project but was not supported by Countryside Council for Wales or the RSPB so permission was not obtained.
An identified German Ringed Osprey (1996) hung around Wales 1998 and 1999.
My Ospreys in Wales book has arrived today. Unfortunately, the first one never turned up so Emyr has kindly sent another, only posted 2 days ago! It looks a good as expected, and am looking forward to reading it.
I'm so pleased you have it, ChrisyB - happy reading!
Thanks Clare!
Happy New Year, Everyone, and wishing you lots of birds in 2015, especially Ospreys! And thanks, Clare, for the new thread and heads up about the new Dyfi blog. Now I'm off to order the Dyfi book--did not order before Christmas because I did not want it to arrive when we were away for the holidays. Can't wait!
Kind regards, Ann
Ann, you're going to love it!
