NOVEMBER – Winter is setting in. With return to Standard Time the dark evenings are even longer. It will soon be dark by 6:00 p.m. here in southern Ohio. Many of our November days are just all-over grey, from grey skies to gray hills with leafless grey trees and grey atmosphere – just cold, damp and gloomy. Still too early to expect much, if any, snow. But on an occasional sunny day we might enjoy a heavy frost on lingering green leaves. And inside all is warm, colorful and cheery. All month (in my family, anyway) we are planning the Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving Day, a day set aside for giving thanks to God for all the blessings in our lives, is a national holiday and a major one for most of us.
Here at the Gabfest, we have the gloom of empty nests. But we also have the cheer of knowing that Millicent is settled in her warm winter home, while Breagha is enjoying his second winter not too far away. Our chat-room fires are kept burning brightly and our new TV/telly screen is always at the ready., so hopefully we can all keep our computers in working order and enjoy a little chit-chat, some music and maybe a bit of streetwalking. Special Events include the possibility of another Music Night with suggested Movie theme and a group streetwalk to some as yet mystery location.
So where is our Gabfest chat-room.? Have you ever wondered? Well of course, it is at some undisclosed cyberspace location in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, not too far from the Loch Garten nest, home of EJ and Odin.
Exactly what I told Jesse when I talked with him yesterday, Fish, and not to lose his way away from Scottish.
I see that they have brought the snowman out of storage and the bell has replaced the end feeder at the Ontario feeding station.. One lone bird enjoys the feast. I feel certain that he cares not for the shape of the container that holds his food.
I finally found the active cam for the bird feeding sation at ITHACA, NEW YORK, USA. The new link is http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/40/Cornell_Lab_FeederWatch_Cam/
Anyway today seems to be a very typical Ohio November day at Ithaca. See what I meant when I tried to describe a "grey day"?
Ithaca station has been very active since I found it a few minutes ago. Doves, a woodpecker and others have come and gone and have at some time occupied each of the feeders. Currently a flock of red-winged blackbirds has moved in. They are easily identified by the bars on their shoulders, which I can see only faintly on several of them. Just enough to tell me these are indeed RW blackbirds.
These are all bird that I would see at feeders in my own backyard if only the squirrels would leave them alone. Except the redwinged blackbirds. They used to be seen frequently, but not any more. Don't know why.
A good picture of a red-winged blackbird. Not my own photograghy of course. Copyright is embedded in the photo and non-commercial use (no money involved) is allowed.
Good evening all already very dark outside and very windy! A beautiful fullmoon tonight.
Nice to see you back Bente I know what its like with different shifts! My OH and me do shift work and sometimes we are like passing ships in the night! Today he is on a late shift and I am on nights! I am very pleased you have met someone nice.
Here is a view of the moors near the Warren House Inn!
June Ilove your red winged blackbirds. Also the peacocks really beautiful!
June here is a pic of my chocolate cosmos, I have now moved them near the house to protect themfrom frost, they are not hardy!
Hi Willow & I love your picture of the moors. Looks like a grey day there also. Will check tonight for the full moon. I have caught glimpses recently that the full moon is approaching, but we have been and are experiencing typical November grey days (and nights!) with scattered drizzle and rain. "DREICH" I think Richard would call it. Which reminds me, I haven't checked the Main Blog for awhile.
