THE LG OSPREY GABFEST FOR NOVEMBER, 2014

NOVEMBER – Winter is setting in.   With return to Standard Time the dark evenings are even longer.  It will soon be dark by 6:00 p.m. here in southern Ohio.  Many of our November days are just all-over grey, from grey skies to gray hills with leafless grey trees and grey atmosphere – just cold,  damp and gloomy.  Still too early to expect much, if any, snow. But on an occasional sunny day  we might enjoy a heavy frost on lingering green leaves.   And inside all is warm, colorful and cheery.  All month (in my family, anyway) we are planning the Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving Day, a day set aside for giving thanks to God for all the blessings in our lives, is a national holiday and a  major one for most of us.

Here at the Gabfest, we have the gloom of empty nests.    But we also have the cheer of knowing that Millicent is settled in her warm winter home, while Breagha is enjoying his second winter not too far away. Our chat-room fires are kept burning brightly and our new TV/telly screen is always at the ready., so hopefully we can all keep our computers in working order and enjoy  a little chit-chat, some music and maybe a bit of streetwalking. Special Events include the possibility of another Music Night with suggested Movie theme and a group streetwalk to some as yet mystery location.

So where is our Gabfest chat-room.?  Have you ever wondered?  Well of course,  it is at some undisclosed cyberspace location in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, not too far from the Loch Garten nest, home of EJ and Odin.

  • WHAT? "Scottish music" night? And I did not know about this? When is it starting? I do not have any Scottish music ideas, but I'd be happy to hear them! :))

  • Good morning all. June thankyou for the lovely bird pics i especially like the birds in flight in the sunset really beautiful. Dont know what they are though!

Morning CC, Didnt know of a Scottish Music night. I dont know if they were talking about a music channel Fish and June listen to I think WOBO. I could be wrong though!

  • What a horrible night last night! Thunder and lightning which I love but not the rain and wind:(. The lightening was very spectacular, lighting up the trees and clouds on the horizon.

I would like to master photographing lightening its so quick!

  • CC, a local radio station has  a program "Music of Scotland" with host Jesse Andrews each Wed afternoon . You might enjoy joining Fish and myself as we tune in tomorrow afternoon.  It is 12 noon Eastern time.

WOBO, Batavia, Ohio is an entirely voluntary station.  The only paid employee is the engineer. Most of the hosts have no professional training.  They bring their own music and give their time just for love of what they do.

http://tunein.com/radio/WOBO-887-s21636/         This link takes you directly to listening mode.  Listen to Jesse's program a few times,  then when and if we do have another Scottish music night, you will have some good ideas as to how to join in.

Any "Gabfest Music Night" is always discussed and planned at least a week in advance.

  • Hi, Willow.  Aren't the birds in he sunset storks?  Wasn't Bente telling us about storks in Germany?  Then Gardenbirder with the help of her friend is always quick on ID.

  • Keith I forgot to thank you for the updated chart of our ospreys. Im always wondering about White 14.Is that who you saw on your travels to Africa? I know you did see one. Was it the brother or sister that didnt make it across the Sahara, I think she became ill as the data showed her flying slowly and at low altitude. I always had huge hopes for White 14 and hope to see him return next spring. Must be 2 years old now.

  • I think they are storks June Im not brilliant at IDing birds! We saw storks last year in Eastern France, there was a flock of them feeding in a field. We do not get them here but wish we did!

It is cold here this morning and after such a long time of warm weather is a shock! Frost tomorrow so must take my tender plants in like my chocolate cosmos which is still flowering!

  • I had a visit from Mr sparrowhawk day before yesterday he took a blue tit off the back of my garden chair. Just a pile of blue feathers :(. They come in quite often and yesterday there was a pile of black feathers.

  • My cosmos are planted firmly in the ground.  How do you take yours in.  One is at least 8 feet tall and grows to the roof overhang.  I don't think it & the others would  survive being moved even if I wanted to.

I did bring in my vining sweet potato.  It was still growing so I cut it way back and brought it inside.  When it stops growing I'm anxious to dump it all out and see if it has made any new ones.  The original still looks firm and healthy, which surprises me.  I thought it would have been deteriorated and consumed by it own growth by now.

  • My cosmos are chocolate cosmos and dont grow that tall. That is very tall for cosmos!  I have had some that grew to about 4 foot and the flowers were pink red white mixture. Mine are a deep red and almost look black. They are in pots so I can bring them into my potting shed. I love all types of cosmos because they flower for so long.
