NOVEMBER – Winter is setting in. With return to Standard Time the dark evenings are even longer. It will soon be dark by 6:00 p.m. here in southern Ohio. Many of our November days are just all-over grey, from grey skies to gray hills with leafless grey trees and grey atmosphere – just cold, damp and gloomy. Still too early to expect much, if any, snow. But on an occasional sunny day we might enjoy a heavy frost on lingering green leaves. And inside all is warm, colorful and cheery. All month (in my family, anyway) we are planning the Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving Day, a day set aside for giving thanks to God for all the blessings in our lives, is a national holiday and a major one for most of us.
Here at the Gabfest, we have the gloom of empty nests. But we also have the cheer of knowing that Millicent is settled in her warm winter home, while Breagha is enjoying his second winter not too far away. Our chat-room fires are kept burning brightly and our new TV/telly screen is always at the ready., so hopefully we can all keep our computers in working order and enjoy a little chit-chat, some music and maybe a bit of streetwalking. Special Events include the possibility of another Music Night with suggested Movie theme and a group streetwalk to some as yet mystery location.
So where is our Gabfest chat-room.? Have you ever wondered? Well of course, it is at some undisclosed cyberspace location in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, not too far from the Loch Garten nest, home of EJ and Odin.
JUNE - I will keep you posted on happenings at Dunedin. Having visited the nest at Stirling Links twice I do follow this nest.
Latest at the nest - Good Morning Friends! Hope y'all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving! Pinella has been at the nest since early morning. She's waiting patiently for Stirling to come. Within the next few weeks we should start seeing more activity at the nest. Once Stirling returns the two will begin bringing in sitcks, branches, bedding and anything they find to decorate their home. Osprey's are known to be junk collectors and it's amazing the things they will bring to the nest. Two seaso...ns ago Stirling brought Pinella a live crab.
(C) - Thanks to Dunedin Osprey Cam.
At 7am it is daylight in Ithica NY while it is still dark here in southwestern Ohio. We are in the same time zone, but Mr. Sun does not know that.
Thanks for the Dunedin report, Keith. Hopefully we'll soon have a family to watch grow while we await the return of our own EJ & Odin and other UK osprey. An active nest helps pass away the long dark winter months.
During the night I found this at Little House. not sure what it is, but I'll check it out in daylight.
Then this at the seed table. "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" at Little House.
JUNE - Your post reminds me of a sing song. Not sure what version but I quite like Perry Como.
Good afternoon all. June I loved your "word picture" describing the frogspawn. We used to collect it and bring it home and my Mum would tell us to take it back to where it came from! I too love the Indian pipe so delicate looking. It looks so cold at Ithica feeders!
Keith hope you get your DVD we have quite a lot of them and all are brilliant and can be watched over without ever getting bored with them! I find it interesting to find out how the camera crew manage to photograph these events often with very great difficulty, so we can truly appreciate what we are seeing from the comfort of our arm chairs! LOL!
June Ive just seen your squirrel scoffing at the table how familiar that is! As i was getting into my car to go to work I saw the squirrel running along the fence towards the feeders that I had just refilled! :( I did not have time to shoo him away as was running a little late! I expect the seed to be almost gone when i get home! They are just so greedy!
The seed table at Little House seems to work well. The host is very generous with his seed. The squirrels seem content enough with it that they don't bother the many feeders. So apparently everybody is happy. Sometimes the squirrels and various birds even share, something that never happens at my one or two feeders
But yes the squirrels are indeed very greedy! The birds eat their fill then leave. The squirrels eat their fill then fill their jaws to carry away the food to bury somewhere then come back for more.
