Weekly Chat, Sunday, March 28 2010

Hi All: I'm a bit early starting this since it's right before midnight your time.  Anyway, on the last page of the previous Weekly Chat, Tiger had some interesting info about what's involved in putting forward Big Ben. I had no idea.  And Cirrus posted a shot of two very noisy creatures (thankfully we can't hear them!).  And Soosin is looking for Karen.   Had a nice day out with daughter; won't be around tomorrow evening your time as I'm taking the train down to Burbank Airport to meet a friend for dinner who's got a stopover there for a few hours en route to her home in Sacramento.  Won't be home 'til around 10:30 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. UK time.

Tiger – just revisited the Male Pale link you gave. OUTSTANDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alan – oh, just so cute

  • Me too!  Nice pic of the puffin, Alan.

Putting this on this thread, as don't want to annoy the serious birdwatchers:

    W A I T I N G

I'm waiting and I'm looking, with a fish still in my hand -

I'm hoping for my Big Brave Boy - I'm sure you'll understand.

A girl just has to look her best, and eat a healthy diet

So, when the wind blows on her head (I know you'll keep this quiet)

All her feathers will look good:  her claws will all be neat -

I've always been fastidious, and looked after my feet.

    -----

I'm trying not to worry, that another girl has bagged him-

He's such a handsome lad, you know, Someone Else might just have grabbed him

And kept her talons on him tight - but, surely, it will be alright?

So, I'm sitting here now, all agog - I'm scanning all the skies.

I'm sure he'll like someone like me, who's motherly and wise....

My eyes are bright, my wings are strong

Oh!  He's bound to come back before too long!

  • Oh Lindybird you have just made me tearful, what a talent you have.  Have been watching EJ scanning the skies for her handsome Odin and realy hoping he turns up soon.

    Margobird

  • Says it all,Lindybird - fantastic!

  • Thank you kindly.  I have found it very moving to watch these last few days, how much she is obviously looking out for someone.

  • Morning all: Well, at LG I see it's still a case of "Some day my prince will come," and at Lilycam, I tuned in to see two huge feet - Mom stretching while Hope fidgets. Amazing how gentle Lily is turning the baby this way and that.

Had good train trip - got on at the Goleta station, which is nearer our house than the downtown Santa Barbara station. which is much, much prettier.  About 20 of us got on in Goleta, which was where this particular train started the trip. I got settled upstairs in a nice window seat on the ocean side of the train, which was great, because at Santa Barbara the entire world got on and there was standing room only.  The conductor announced that this was, as usual (apparently), the busiest train/route of the week and was sold out and that no standing upstairs was allowed, that those without seats couldn't hang out too long in the cafe car seats, and would whoever stashed their surfboards in the bicycle rack please come and move them!  The ride along the ocean was beautiful, then we went inland, where the hills behind Los Angeles were still wonderfully green from all the rain.  Passed small rural communities that you'd never see from the freeway, complete with horses, llamas, geese and goats in various (big) back yards.  Met friend and had so-so dinner, but that was okay since we were busy chatting, then I got the 7:30 train back to Santa Barbara and it, too, was jammed. Managed to get a seat though. It was full of students returning to Univ of SB after a weekend away. Most were on their laptops, cell phones, and a surprising number had skate boards, apparently the transportation method of choice among the young and broke once they reached their destination.

Sue: Saw that paper dart - well, they have to do something waiting for those eggs to hatch, right?

Cirrus/Diane:  No, no. no. No vanilla or any other flavoring and not sugar, but good splosh of half-and-half (cream/full milk).   Also like cafe au lait/plain latte.  Does anyone remember Camp coffee - that awful syrupy chicory(?) flavored stuff?  Then came instant.  I really onlly started drinking coffee when I came to the states.

Lindybird: Congrats on the egg project - I've never blown out an egg. Sounds messy.  And am a disaster in the craft department.  I wonder that doing Rubik's cubes doesn't get awfully easy after a few times (she said, never having tried it).   Loved Ode to Odin!  How long does it take you to come up with these things?

Patriciat: Re graveyard trivia, heard on the radio about a lady somewhere in the U.S. who had a parking meter installed at her graveside with "Time Expired." showing.  Not quite as poetic as Mr. MacMurchow!

Alan: Folding down palm trees!  :-))  Oh no, not another webcam.   Love the puffin pix - they always look so surprised - and you actually got one to pose for the camera.  :-)

Djoan: Last I heard for bad backs was take painkillers and try to do normal stuff. Hope it's coming along okay.

Margobird: Sorry about the hearing loss, but glad eyes are still good since you really need those for the webcams.   As Cirrus says, MRI's will cause hearing loss - and bad headache!   :-))

Having lazy morning - off to count whales this afternoon, which will be especially interesting since they counted their first calf yesterday!

  • Hi Annette:  Loved your description of the train trip.  Kids all over the world seem to use their skateboards just anywhere these days, sometimes its rather scary!

Afraid I bashed out the poetry in only about 15 minutes whilst drinking my tea after lunch, & watching the lonely EJ busily looking around.  (Could probably have spent more time refining it but thought it would be apt as she is still alone at present).

ps.  Loved the 'parking meter at the graveside' story!

Annette – welcome back. So pleased you had a good ride and great visit.

Lindybird – you wrote the poem for all of us . Well said and well written.

And now EJ has left the nest ! taking her supper with her

  • Brilliant poem Lindybird. Definately up to your usual standard.
