Evening all: It's 3:30 a.m. UK time. All quiet at the nest. Sunrise in Edinburgh will be at 5:57 a.m....
It seems odd without volume and I'm on full volume at the minute!!!
Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.
We don't appear to have sound yet, ayjaysea. Let's hope that will come later.
Poor old EJ she is certainly getting buffetted by ther "breeze"!!
She really does appear to be scanning the skies-- for other ospreys?
Tish, your quotation speaks volumes unlike my speakers !!!!!
How apt!!
Cirrus Ollie was first the male in residence at Loch Garten from 1990. In his first year he was not very good as both chicks died after fledging. This was possibly due to Ollie not providing enough fish.
It was 1993 however that made Ollie a legend. The female got caught in fishing line and flew away never to be seen again. Ollie was left as a single father and successfully reared two chicks by himself.
Next year he found a new female who was named Olive. Olive was a bit surprised when she found her new man fed the chicks. Ollie kept on as resident male until 2002 when he failed to return and the great saga of Olive/Henry/Black ?/ EJ/Red 8T began. It led to two fallow years at Loch Garten (2002, 2003) and finally a great year in 2004 when EJ and Henry raised three chicks.
I think Ollie has the record of bringing 14 fish to the nest (possibly one more than Henry) and mating 49 times in one day. That is presumably a shared record with Olive :) Also the two records were clearly not on the same day!
It is frustratingly hard to get pictures of Ollie. I have seen ones and I can envisage him but I cannot put my hand on one. There was a special article in a bird magazine in 2004 to celebrate 50 years since the return of the osprey. The ospreys in that article are almost certainly Ollie and Olive but they frustratingly do not tag the photos.
There was a poster on another forum who was a huge fan of Ollie but he has not been around for over a year now.
I may have some video of Ollie and Olive which I might try to find and possible digitize it.
That is what I know.

Good one ayjaysea top marks for observation!! LOL
Thanks for that interesting bit of history, Tiger for those of us who do not know much beyond last year. It seems that the birds all have different personalities and strengths & weaknesses, just like us puny humans.
Normal 0 false false false
Well, Tiger, that’s a story and a half and I confess to some tears about the chicks older enough to fledge (!) and then die as well as the awful demise of the female with the fishing line. Just a little too close to home, in a manner of speaking, since we nearly lost Odin the same way last year. And then to read:
‘the great saga of Olive/Henry/Black ?/ EJ/Red 8T began.’ I think perhaps I’m better off not knowing about all that (yet). Although I do remember bits and pieces that one fan or another mentioned ‘in passing’ on the blog last year.
How clever you must be to be able to digitize a video. If you’re motivated and do it I would be very interested to see it.
Thank you for taking the time to write all that.
