This is our third month of ospreys for 2014. The season is really flashing past.
Loch Garten has been quiet this year. Just two experienced birds getting on with raising three chicks.
Loch of the Lowes has had a disappointing time with a crow stealing one egg and the other two failing to hatch. Also there was great excitement when Blue XD made his return to Britain.
Glaslyn as usual was first to have a chick hatch quickly followed by two more. The Glaslyn pair are indeed a formidable pair of ospreys.
Dyfi continues to surprise as they have not only got the usual pair of ospreys but a spare female waiting in the wings in the form of Blue 24. However Blue 24 has now got to keep a certain distance from the nest.
There was great interest in whether the new Manton Bay pair would manage a second clutch of eggs. In the event they did didn't. However ospreys everywhere should take a trip to Manton Bay to take lessons in nest building. Are we seeing the start of a new dynasty in Manton Bay?
Lots of interest in Bassenthwaite and Kielder. Also the surprise news that there are not one but two nests at Esthwaite.
The other great news was the return of the two year old 8F a 2012 bird from Manton Bay.
An exciting month ahead.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
I pretty much agree with Clare although I had really hoped that that dear old veteran, Lady, would have had a chick.Bit of a roller coaster season but a lot of positive sites too and things that seemed "bad"...i.e. Manton Bay have turned the corner into positivity.Darwin's theory in action
Yesterday's update from LDOP was a little more promising

Thanks Chloe. Does the LDOP have a cam or do we just keep an eye on their FB.
Hi Lmac. There is a cam here but no live streaming. Picture is updated every 5 mins from 10am - 3pm

Sad news from Dunrovin. The third chick has died. I do not know the details but I assume it was killed by the middle chick as I understand it is particularly violent. Echoes of Loch Garten 2012 and 2008.
I've not followed Dunrovin this year TIGER, but very sorry to hear the news. Was this due to a lack of food, or just bullying?

Apparently it was the first chick that is the violent one and it stopped chick #3 eating at all even though there was enough fish.
That must have been awful to watch. Thank goodness that hasn't happened at LG this year.
For me this season has been extremely sad. I never expect all the birds to return, and this year we seemed to have so many come back I was hopeful it would be a great season.. Each year has it's share of tragedy but what I didn't expect was to lose two adult birds in the UK. I worry about them so much while they are in Africa or on route but I have always considered them safe while here, so the loss of the Tweed Valley female and Yellow HA was a shock.
