Recording events on the Loch Garten nest

Good morning, all!

I have been wondering for a while whether we're going about the business of recording events at Loch Garten in the wrong way as the interest and number of people posting seems to have taken a serious nosedive this year.  I've just looked at yesterday's Daily Update thread - started by the magnificent Scylla at Mission Control in the small hours - the thread got 31 responses from only five people (including Scylla herself) and, given the greater number of both posts and posters only two years ago, I would like to know if there is a sincere lack of interest in this nest or whether it is simply down to a much bigger number of people lurking rather than posting.  Incidentally the Daily Update thread from May 9th 2012 got 174 responses even though the only thing going on was incubation with the odd fish delivery.

Any thoughts?

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • You need the Puffin browser to get the webcam on iPads and Androids. Have you got that on your tablet Limpy?

  • I can get the webcams on MS Surface Pro 2, which is what I am using while my PC is (still) in for repair.

I am someone who gets impatient trying to extract "news" from the running commentaries, but I do appreciate those who relay these for others who wish to see such detail.  I rarely look in during incubation time, and when the hatches happen, am more likely to be watching (when I am not busy) the nest than reading about it - sorry!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • ChloeB A very big thank you I will have to try the Puffin browser out.

  • Just caught up with this thread since I posted much earlier today (am in bed now!) ... Read with great interest all other posters' views on this subject!  Would like to add that I have Nexus 7 tablet which runs Google Chrome & can get LG cam fine direct from Carnyx link but two problems always ... First is no ability to capture & post screen grabs & second is that if I notice something of interest on the nest, by the time I have called up DU I find that it has already been reported!

  • I have an Archos tablet which is Android...apart from that I know nothing else 'techie'  about it!

Its great for reading but the predictive/spell check thingy is annoying when writing!!  I even got Chinese characters once ;-)

  • Can quite understand that LB, Google is American/English & does this predicted text & tries to correct everything to American ... gradually building up an English dictionary though!!  We do have some fights at times over several frequently used words which it stubbornly refuses to change!! Grrrrr

  • I have to be vigilant, as some of mine is unprintable, LOL, Wendy!!!

  • This thread has brought out some valid points that have come out of the remarks made. I do hope the RSPB pick up on some of them

Are RSPB aware  of the serious problems? It drives me mad how long it takes to go between threads or back to the main page. Also getting that message about a post already existing when you have only just pressed "Reply"  The only thing for the better I find this year is that pictures post first time.

  • Patily, I think you may be assured that they are aware. This has been taken to the 'top' and as you are aware there were changes!!! There are major cost implications and I suspect that is the reason for the current level of service.

  • Even so MIKE I think they should try and sort out how long it takes to go between threads etc It has just taken just under 3 minutes to get from Rutland to main page. When I am feeling rough I feel like giving up and others will have their reasons for doing the same and then...... Sometimes its quicker to close the window and start again rather than wait to go back to main page
