Simply amazing. Scientists in Tasmania are tracking bees with tiny sensors. The next stage is to shrink the sensor to track fruit fly & mosquitoes.
Temp may be cooler but the high humidity makes it feel just as unpleasant. The bushfires have destroyed at least 15 homes, 425,000 hectares, not to mention stock, crops & fencing. Concern that the first stage of the Tour DownUnder may have to be cancelled as the route is through one of the bushfire areas. Many of the fires, some still not under control, are in areas I have visited or plan to visit on photo excursions. News is much worse when one can picture the scene rather than just another anonymous place in the news. I haven't been out in the car since last Mon and driving to church this morn I felt quite strange.
Brenda - We get them all the time and are comical to watch but a bit bossy and chase all the little birds away, just last week OH said look out and see how many Starlings have arrived, there must have been about 30 of them squabbling amongst themselves for the food. :-)
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Good morning. A murky start, but now some sunshine; still cold. Some doubt about trip over to Gateshead tomorrow.
Limpy – cute little Weasel face there!
Re Blacketyside: when in Fife last year, we enjoyed soft fruit from there.
Brenda – I couldn’t be bothered with WinterWatch last evening – we did record it, so may watch during coffee breaks today.
Diane – I wonder whether you will get female Deer around as well as the big Buck – and cute babies too; that would be so wonderful, on your own land. Do take real care over that hanging branch!
Annette – trying to imagine Mr Duck wearing your pants and shirt! Have a good day fetching your stuff.
On the subject of multiple births, a second-cousin-once-removed (never could get to grips with those relationships) produced triplets when her youngest of three other children was only eleven months old! We have discovered a few twins further back in the family tree.
Mary – our bird numbers were down from average, and a reduced number of species, when we did our BTO count this morning – but it was drizzling at the time. A dry day would help for the BGBW at weekend: I think ours will be Sunday as we are going to an “Artisans’ Fair” on Saturday.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
OG, I do know what you mean about Winter Watch. I am not sure what kind of audience they are aiming for. I do think they have lost their focus. They have also lost some fantastic camera men.
BRENDA - I am glad you said that, I was beginning to think it must just be me! Maybe the BBC Natural History Unit needs to take a year off these seasonal programmes and rethink both format and personnel. There have been some much better Nature programmes on this winter, but with less publicity about them.
Oh dear ! Murray has lost to Federer in four sets. 6-3 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-4
Disappointing - especially with Djokovic already out of the frame!
I always miss Simon King's appearance on Spring/Autumn Watch and really liked Colin Buchannan.
