Weekly Chat (non-osprey), Sunday 19 Jan 2014

Simply amazing. Scientists in Tasmania are tracking bees with tiny sensors. The next stage is to shrink the sensor to track fruit fly & mosquitoes.

Temp may be cooler but the high humidity makes it feel just as unpleasant. The bushfires have destroyed at least 15 homes, 425,000 hectares, not to mention stock, crops & fencing. Concern that the first stage of the Tour DownUnder may have to be cancelled as the route is through one of the bushfire areas. Many of the fires, some still not under control, are in areas I have visited or plan to visit on photo excursions. News is much worse when one can picture the scene rather than just another anonymous place in the news. I haven't been out in the car since last Mon and driving to church this morn I felt quite strange.

  • Good Morning ALL. Foggy morning here.

What lovely news, AQ. Congratulations to your daughter and yourself. I can see you are going to be very busy, even before the twins are born.

  • George, I returned from playing bowls yesterday and found that my OH was watching the World Bowls Championship on TV. I can see I will be asking you for some tips when we start playing outside again. It takes me quite a few practise sessions to adjust from the indoor carpet to the green again. I do take heart though from seeing that even the professionals can still make some elementary mistakes.

  • Rita, Home made marmalade, yummy. I don't make it any longer, although a lady, who lives nearby, always arrives with some jars for me, without the shreds. I could never eat the shreds, even as a child.

Annette, I see you are back to normal. Dashing here, there and everywhere. Did you arrange for your extended patio ?

Diane, I can't recall ever seeing a pic of your boxer dog in his boots and scarf. Do you have a photograph, please ??

  • Good morning on quite a pleasant day – beautiful pink sunrise and still bright. Watched WW last evening – all a bit vague and dull, I thought, but did enjoy Unsprung afterwards – so much better with Nick presenting, even if he does keep dropping his cue cards! Been baking muffins while OH shopped; chiropody this afternoon.

Mary – I also enjoyed the TV programmes by Francesco da Mosto, even though I have never been to Italy and have no desire to do so.

Annette – pleased to read that your stomach is okay now – hope it continues so! Don’t rush around too much today after your early start!

AQ – not very surprised by your news: when you said you would be busy in coming months, I guessed your daughter was hatching again, but I didn’t even think of twins. That will come as a big shock to Little Miss! I hope all goes well – when is the birth expected?

Hello to everyone else – got to help put shopping away now!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG - Saw a bit of that sunrise this morning too, but its clouded over and when the wind blows would take the face off you, an icy wind!    No need to go to Italy when you have toured around it with the Count :-)

Diane - Our daffodils are about a foot through the ground, hope your snow doesn't drift over the pond to us .    I was looking at this lovely film of the Aurora Borealis and thought of you and all your knowledge of heavenly bodies LOL...

  • It was a lovely sunny morning here for our walk but now it is overcast with spots of rain. Have been food shopping this morning as I was down to no bread and very little milk. Gave the butcher at Blankettyside a visit as he rears and butchers his own Aberdeen Angus cattle so you know what you are getting.

Off now for some lunch then our afternoon walk

George, Do you mean, Blacketyside, which I have heard about. I even went to Google, which is what I do when I don't recognise a place name, but couldn't find Blankettyside. The name intrigued me. I do enjoy an Aberdeen Angus steak but I have to buy mine at Waitrose.

  • Mary, That video is lovely to watch.

Just read this warning for all dog owners in the UK. Mainly in Southern England

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25820926

  • MARY - lovely Aurora video!

GEORGE - we too now have a farmer/butcher rearing their own - so enjoying lovely local meat.

BRENDA - sorry about the doggy illness; I hope people will heed the warning so their pets won't suffer.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi, all. Here's a live webcam (tower cam in Times Square) showing the blizzard hitting New York City today. It'll be a bad day for Pale Male, the famous Central Park red-tailed hawk and his kin.

Mary: I loved that aurora video. Gorgeous!!! Nature is grand!
