RUTLAND OSPREYS - 2014

The team are off to The Gambia on 7/1/2014 and Tim's latest Blog gives all the details. Watch this space.

  • Good morning Scylla. Thank you for the video. It seems that the whole site is on a go slow this morning.

She got it herself took her 4 minutes !!!!!

I'm not surprised to see you say that, VALERIE, she's a brilliant fisher and she does have a ready supply.  I suppose she's been too scared to leave her eggs for her own sake, only to defend them, until she was completely desperate.

She plonked the large fish straight onto her eggs:

Then the passing osprey's wing and tail could be seen:

  • An osprey made several attempts to land, either on her back or on the nest, and succeeded in landing on the nest but was quickly driven off.  It had rings, that's all I can say.

Mysteriously, the stream stopped downloading for 10+ minutes and I don't have it :-(

  • Morning MIKE!  As you can see, am plagued by various difficulties this morning.

  • I know probably not the most pc thing to say but I do not worry or feel sad for these eggs. I am glad Maya has left them to feed herself. Without healthy adults there would be no more eggs. There is always next year for Maya to raise chicks. I felt the same when Lady'seggs ddidn't hatch, for me as long as the adult birds are well albeit the species are protected they are somewhat thriving.

  • If as they say there has been only regular coupling since 6th April then first egg might not even be fertile since laid within 3 days ans appeared by the 9th.He might have caught her, just.

The other two eggs might still work Depends on length of incubation time.weather and damage even internal damage and.. succesful coupulation. and not fired up yet.

A male bird or for that matter a male anything has no influence on oestrogen flow, ovulation or laying whatsoever, only fertilisation and he has the same requirements for  testosterone as she has for oestrogen flow. He only fertilises the oosyte and feeds her to build the eggs and she sits still.

Finally.. there is still nothing wrong at all with the bird on the Dunkeld nest!

  • Ospreyfishionda,  Lady is indeed a miracle I just meant three years ago Laird was very remiss in incubation and none hatched.  I think the evidence speaks for itself that there is nothing wrong with that bird.

Thank you for your insight into the reproduction influences on these birds.

On the contrary, LMAC, it probably is the most PC thing to say - it's those who can't detach who are non-PC.  However, I am not worried or sad for the eggs, but for dear Maya, who must be a very hungry, harassed and unhappy bird :'(  And that's non-PC too ;-)

Even now she gazes longingly at her fish, but she doesn't feel able to get up again yet.  (Of course, this shot was very opportune for me to put my anthropomorphic interpretation on it.)

  • Maya has been joined by 28, now continuing to eat her fish.
