Osprey Chat Thread for September 2013

Well the beginning of September usually marks the end of the osprey season. This year we still have two chicks at Dyfi who may well be here for another month. What two magnificent chicks they are.

Cerist provided drama just after fledging by going missing for 53 hours. I had the good fortune to be right there in the Dyfi Visitor Centre when she returned.

Also there is the vexed question of Monty's second nest and what will happen to it over the winter?  My view is that given the chance he would use it in the spring.

The Loch Garten season came to a quiet end with the whole family leaving over the space of a few days and Oighrig and Breagh are now in Spain and France respectively.

We also had news of a chick from a four chick  nest in Sutherland dropping in at Dyfi. Apparently there have been two four chick nests this year. So it has been a good year for ospreys which is not the same for other raptors as they have had a poor season.

We also had news of the translocation of 12 Scottish ospreys to northern Spain.

Anyway it is now down to the long wait until our feathered friends return in 2014.

  • Scylla fabulous slide show of Monty, he certainly is photogenic and not camera shy:)

  • According to  Dyfi chat there is news of an osprey being shot at somewhere around the R Tay  Has anybody heard of this?

  • Patily, that is disturbing :(

edit as with any raptors or any wildlife.

  • Yes, Super slide show of our Mont.  Like the Curlew in the background !!

  • I was putting on Satelite tracked thread and think belongs here and I honestly am on the fence but so much I do not like and open minded but this really bothers me and asked so many times.

Still no update on Fearna and why did she die in Northern Spain where translocation is. Her body was recovered and photographs? People know that found her. Was she shot as the forum think so and no evidence. If so why translocate to an area that shoots. I want to be on board and yes interested but no update on Fearna as in Northern Spain, I honestly think something not right. I keep asking and RD said he would update as soon as pics back and something along the lines not 100%  but and look up. still no update on Fearna and why did she die in Northern Spain where translocation is. Her body was recovered and photographs? People know that found her. Was she shot as the forum think so and no evidence. If so why translocate to an area that shoots.

I want to be on board and yes interested but no update on Fearna as in Northern Spain, I honestly think something not right. I keep asking and RD said he would update but has not. Read his page on Fearna. RD said he would get photographs and report as soon as received and think May but probably wrong.  Why Ospreys still with tags that are supposed to drop off not been caught to remove and see how these trackers have effected the birds, that is an important aftercare to me. It was said 3 yrs and then the goal post was moved to 5 yrs on springwatch. Beatrice must be at 5 yrs now.  Why not catch and see what effect these trackers have had and it will answer pro and against. I do look forward to this happening.

I honestly am interested but too many questions not answered and do want to be convinced

  • B&B - I honestly wouldn't read too much into the fact that Roy hasn't updated on Fearna's demise. He has evidently been really busy through the season (when isn't he! Wish I had as much energy, and I'm half his age!) and probably simply hasn't had the time. It would be a more complex post than just a 2-line update.

I may be way out, but rather wonder if he has lost his IT backup - certainly more or less nothing has happened on his FB and twitter accounts for ages, and I know someone else looked after those for him. I would have expected him to have the pages for new birds up by now too, which again is a much bigger job than routine updates - and nuwe are still waiting for that, with many birds on the move.

  • Thanks Rachel, will have to be patient a little longer and true the new birds have not been updated either :) It will be a marathon to update now :)

  • Vespa  In reference to this question about Brown SI. I noticed at the bottom of the page that she did not return in 2002 and a new pair took over the nest.
