Well the beginning of September usually marks the end of the osprey season. This year we still have two chicks at Dyfi who may well be here for another month. What two magnificent chicks they are.
Cerist provided drama just after fledging by going missing for 53 hours. I had the good fortune to be right there in the Dyfi Visitor Centre when she returned.
Also there is the vexed question of Monty's second nest and what will happen to it over the winter? My view is that given the chance he would use it in the spring.
The Loch Garten season came to a quiet end with the whole family leaving over the space of a few days and Oighrig and Breagh are now in Spain and France respectively.
We also had news of a chick from a four chick nest in Sutherland dropping in at Dyfi. Apparently there have been two four chick nests this year. So it has been a good year for ospreys which is not the same for other raptors as they have had a poor season.
We also had news of the translocation of 12 Scottish ospreys to northern Spain.
Anyway it is now down to the long wait until our feathered friends return in 2014.
Tiger Signature
I think it's a grey metal ring & the ring on the other leg has come off, it's only plastic & they come off sometimes on the storks.
Best wishes

Next question - Country of Origin ?
Only specultaing but think it may be a metal ring on left leg which would leave a darvic if one was fitted on the right leg that may have broken. They become fairly brittle and crack.
Then again may never have had a darvic - I know a ringer who told me some time ago some Scottish Ospreys were only ever fitted with BTO rings.
What country options do we have here - Tiger you probably are the best to answer that - I am not.
I use THIS site to find out who has ringed a bird. A white ring could be Roy Dennis in Scotland or Germany.
Anyone able to read the blue ring on page 55 of Osprey sightings? We also had a male adulte with an odd white feather, any possibilites?
I am curious to when a white ring was used in Scotland. obviously EJ springs to mind. Have they and sure they have been used since.
Definately a male Noisette and interesting.
It is grey and I did think it looked white and on the left leg and interesting and hope you all get more info as very interesting. Good luck and hope you get answers :)
Noisette you are certainly bringing it to the table and thank you.
Will look in soon :)
SUSAN B - Many birds in Scotland have beeen ringed White mainly on the left leg. Nethy-Deshar-Rothes-Mallachie-Garten at Loch Garten were all white ringed left leg.
Right Leg White famous birds springing to mind EJ - SS at Tweed Valley. There are many more that have been sighted.
White Right Leg in Wales/England too many to mention. White Left Leg England/Wales can only think of translocated birds to Rutland.
Thank you and definatley before my time and thank you all.
My thoughts wrong but do not mind and nevertheless a fabulous report and thank you.
Noisette your reports are also brilliant like Alan P's and thank you all.
Susan B - One of the posters on these forums is SUEC and she has done a great spredsheet on birds and rings without jeopardising any sensitive nature. This is a link to her pages. I find it very useful for a quick reference.
