Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 1 September 2013

HAPPY NEW WEEK AND NEW MONTH!

Last week's Weekly Chat thread is HERE. The code for this week's Weekly Chat thread is 010913 (in case you ever want to find it from the search box).

  • Brenda:  Hope your OH does not have a permanent scar - that could have been really nasty, but does have a slightly comical sound to the tale... perhaps because it reminds me of some of the old silent films, I expect. ;-)    Seriously though, hope he soon heals.

tina:   You sound as if you are really enjoying yourself in Wales - glad that the weather is remaining good for you.

Popped out for some food shopping this afternoon, and on the way back, met waves of schoolchildren coming back from their first day at High School - how smart they all looked, in their new uniforms!   Probably glad to get the first day in a new class over with.   We have some lovely fuchsias out now in the garden, and the last of the flowering plants such as Phlox and roses.  It was a beautiful afternoon so although I did a bit of weeding and tidying, I also sat in a chair in the garden and nearly went to sleep in the sun - it could be much cooler tomorrow so I don't regret enjoying the last of perhaps the remaining good weather of the summer.

You are right about the shoes:  I either go barefoot or wear slippers first thing in the morning, but as soon as I put on some shoes I feel ready for whatever is planned...   I remember reading about the famous actress Beryl Reid saying once  "I need to get the shoes right, and once I am wearing the proper shoes for the character I'm playing, the rest follows more easily."   Its very true that some shoes make me feel more important and in charge of things!!

Shoes are a pet hate of mine - I must have been a barefoot savage in a previous life!  I don't like heels (though at 6 feet I don't exactly need them!) and I'm sick to death of both shoe and boot manufacturers assuming we've all got legs like twigs.  I shouldn't have to buy men's footwear to get some width!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Helen was back at school today - her school has quite a sensible uniform, no blazer or tie and she's allowed to wear a skirt!  Loads of schools around here have banned them.

  • Evening all: Earthflight was lovely, though the fast-moving images appeared somewhat digitized on our telly; not sure about that. We've also been having trouble with our PBS station with the sound cutting out for about two seconds every now and then.

Will spend tomorrow trying to avoid the heat - ha!  Take care all.

  • Good morning, all!  Annette - you're trying to avoid the heat?  In California???  Good luck with that.

  • Annette - that is a superb link, and tells the story very well. What is amazing about the site is that it is just a crashed plane on a moor, no fuss, just left as it fell for anyone who can find it to visit. Well, when I say "left as it was", not quite.  Actually, the entire tail section was intact originally and left standing upright until well into  the 1950s. Being visible from the Snake Road (at that time the main road between Sheffield and Manchester), it was felt the tail section was attracting too many visitors to the site, and so it was dismantled.

Captain Tanner is buried at Woodland Cemetery, Yolo County, California.

  • Hi, Mulberry!  Was it called the Snake Road due to its shape or due to the local wildlife?

Neither! It was named after a pub which stands on it, the Snake Inn. The Snake Inn gets it's name from a coat of arms related to the Duke of Devonshire, which used to be it's emblem, and featured crossed serpents.  Most people think it is because it is a twisty road, but there is also a footpath there called the Snake Path, which is actually very straight!

  • Good Morning.   A bit dull here, but dry.  Some people in UK are due some rain today, and others(in the south)  will still get yesterdays sunshine.

mulberry:  Thanks for all the interesting info about the crash site and the Snake Road - I always assumed it was because of the twisty roads, too.

Hope that dear Margo is feeling a little better today.  Also thinking of dibnlib and her OH, and Limpy who has been rather 'crook' lately.

Am off to the cinema just after lunch, with my Friend:  first outing for a long time, to see the new film out called  "About Time".

  • Trying to remember what has happened whilst I was away -

Congrats to Clare and to tina on their weight loss!!  Its a good feeling when you do see results at last, after an effort like that.

Annette:  I was jealous of Diana Nyad and her achievement, too.   I never had too much ambition and have been criticised for that at times, but it must be nice to feel you have done what you set out to do, even if it took years and several dud attempts.

Nice to hear from bjane again.  Hope you're well, bjane!

Loved the metal art you posted pics of , AQ!!   Especially the sheep LOL!!  EDIT:  Just gone back to look and they were GOATS!! - still cute anyway!

Lovely hanging baskets pic, Brenda.  So colourful.  Its nice that we can now click on the 'Like' button to show our appreciation of posts. Hope the new hedge trimmer replacement has now finally arrived!!

george:   Its always a shock to see behind/under/over those appliances we can't normally move to clean.  We can only do our best with the bits we can see!!

Great pics of her visiting GSW from Clare - does she still come regularly?  We've not had a visit from one for ages now, since the feeders have not been so well used.  As we are near the countryside, we assume that the birds get what they need from the fields and hedgerows and don't need our supplements.
