Weekly Chat, Sunday, March 14

Hi all: Lots of news about ospreys and other stuff plus photos (if you're lucky!)  on the previous pages.

  • DJoanS, thanks so much. How exciting is that , to see the nest:)

Just logged onto the Trucker cam for the first time, eating my Yorkie (non UK folks may not get that!!)

Another one to get hooked on now.

BTW, how expensive is grass seed! Bought what I thought was a medium size bad and almost fell over when I saw the price:(

  • DJoanS, Thanks for the info on the nest - how brilliant is that?

I've tried to remain calm about the coming season but, with the nestcam back on-line, I'm giving in to the inevitable!

  • Gary: Haven't bought any grass seed, nor likely to at this point. We put cardboard and mulch  over our entire lawn last June, front and back, and are going to put in water-thrifty shrubs, so while we'll save on water and seed, we're about to spend multiple $$$ on hardscape and plants. Good job our local water board pays 50% of the cost of plants and gives out free water-saving sprinkler heads.

  • Very strange. Roy has posted on the home page that the adult males are still in their wintering quarters, but I definitely heard him say last night that they were all on their way home.  Not just that the females were on their way and the males still sunning themselves.

  • The banding of the Dunedin Florida osprey chicks is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 10:00 am Florida time which is around 2 p.m. UK time if my calculations are correct.

  • Thanks for the info Alan:)

Hazel, that is odd. If they are still there, they can't be there for long

Annette, that' good what you're doing, keeping down on the use of water. I have a new area of yard that needs seed so had to buy it. But, it was still a shock

  • Over 4000 watching Molly the owl. Eggs due to start hatching tomorrow.

  • Hi everyone.

Sorry I've not posted for a few days.  My internet connection has been acting very tempremental, so I've not been online much in the last few days, apart from to check my emails.  The weather has been quite good here and we've even had some sunshine.  Brilliant to see the Loch Garten video up on the main site.  Can't wait to see the ospreys.

Thanks to everyone for all the great replies, pictures, videos, and updates.

    All the best!

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Still no sign of 'Wild Scotland' on the STV Player, but here's one called 'Scotland's Winter Wonderland' which I have just played on the notebook connected to the TV via a HDMI cable. Original broadcast in January during the big freeze, which as we now know lasted a lot longer than we expected. Mostly aerial shots of the Highlands and some famous landmarks and cities in the silence of the deep snow. Worth seeing, especially for ex-pats like myself.

  • Yes Gary, it is Clarke. The story (much abbreviated) for Annette. Once upon a time there was an overseas tourist promotion of Aussieland. After extolling the great things about us, it ended with a girl in a bikini saying "Well where the bloody hell are you?" This girl went on to greater things, including an engagement to the cricketer. The couple became the darling of the promotions industry and were seen at all the in-occasions. Alas, a few weeks ago a photo from the past surfaced. Now the engagement is ended with the ring reportedly being flushed down the toilet. Great drama. Great crisis. Headline news. Cricket beats golf here. LOL

TerryM - I have read the wind turbine link. Thank you. SA has 11 wind farms, providing about 20% of the state's power.

Brenda - I'm with you. Nay, I’ll reach the house before you! I have had too many close encounters with snakes to stop and talk to them.

Thanks to all for pics, cartoons, news, links, chatter, etc, etc. I must "clear the decks" for osprey time – not long now. Another hot day here, 36 yesterday, 35 today, 30 & humid tomorrow. Oh, cool weather, where are you?
