Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey) Sunday 11 August 2013

Happy New Week!

Last week's Weekly Chat thread is HERE.

The code for this week's Weekly Chat thread is WC110813 (in case you ever need to find it using the search box).

(WC stands for Weekly Chat. 11 is the day, 08 is the month, and 13 is the year. I will always follow this format.)

Don't forget to watch for the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight and tomorrow night. If you have cloudy skies, you can watch the online webcasts. See my post at the end of last week's chat thread.

Sending good energy to Margo, Patricia, NiteOwl, Buzz, and anyone else who is dealing with adversity.

I haven't seen Lynette posting for a while. Lynette, I hope you have recovered well from your operation!!!

Also, sending a shout out to Auntie in Finland, who's probably working very hard at her career, and to DJoanS -- also to Caerann in Chicago (I thought of her this week).

  • Lindy: Here's a bird-oriented poetry contest that you might be interested in. Good luck with the cabinet. :-)

All: How to get rid of earworms (songs stuck in your head). LOL!

  • No!!!! Not Suduko!!!! I'd rather have the earworm thanks Diane!

Off to work now - night 4 of 9. Sigh...

  • Thanks for good wishes.  Most of packing finished.

    So, bye for now!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • I'd rather have an ear worm, too!!

My OH does suduko but I don't!!  I usually try to get a different song going, to counteract it.

Thanks for the support in my never ending battle against hoarding, mulberry!  It may be some time before I emerge, triumphant....

    Evening all:

Diane: I'm beginning to feel guilty - haven't started a new Weekly Chat in eons.  I'd love to see the Perseid shower, but we have quite a few lights around here and I'm not sure I can stay up that late; would be nice to have someone to drive up Highway 154 with and hang out; it's definitely not OH's thing. :-(

Annette: No worries about the chat thread. I know that someone else will start it if I'm not around or too busy.

I'm not very good at jigsaw puzzles. My mind just doesn't work that way, so I'm impressed with your abilities! I usually play Scrabble, instead of puzzles. I play with a friend of mine on Facebook or I play the robots here where I can choose a skill level.

Congrats on getting all of your gardening work done!!! I have a bunch of sawdust lying in my driveway that I need to remove. If I sweep it off into the grass it will look awful and clog up the lawn mower. It's too dispersed to get up with a big broom. I'm going out tomorrow with an old vacuum cleaner and attempt to sweep it up. I have some reservations about that method, but I can't think of another way. LOL!

I so, so wish that I was nearer to you and we could drive up HW154 to watch the Perseids tonight! We'd have fun! I went outdoors last night and watched for a while, but a swarm of bats diving around me made me uncomfortable. Actually, I may have been a little scared of the bats. Okay fine, I was really afraid of the dang bats!!! LOLOL!

I'm rarely afraid of any wildlife, even predator species. (I'm not a fearful person, in general.) But these particular bats are aggressive little critters! They fly right at me and will touch me! The tree man who was here after dark was also visibly unnerved by them, and he was an absolutely fearless dude! I love all the Earth's creatures, but the bats aren't my favorite right now. LOLOL

It's cloudy here tonight, anyway, so I guess I'll give up on the meteors.

AQ: Good luck getting familiar with the new camera in time for your trip! I'm sure you'll do it.

Lindy: I've let myself get unorganized, which I HATE. So this week is going to be my week to declutter and organize! I wish you well with your efforts.

Brenda: Hope events are going well with the puppy!

    Night, all.

I must confess that in my youth I would have liked to have met an Australian man just to find out if the infamous line 'Brace yourself, Sheila' was actually in use!!  Sorry, Aquilareen.

Now truly Clare you are much too young to ever have come across the term "Sheila". It wasn't around much in my day and I'm oldener than you. LOL. Linda & OG have kindly answered your "strine" question. You just have to ignore the beginning of the word "Australian", start with Str--, ignore the "l" and slur lazily over most letters to come up with "strine". Simple really. If I am cheeky, what about Grosvenor, Worcester, etc. Then north of the border, I was puzzled by Hawick. Hoick, really???!!!!

  • Another productive day but did manage to flop in hammock with book and snooze for a bit.  Did ironing this evening, then back to jigsaw, which I'm getting compulsive about coz I'm getting close to finishing it (but then what!!??)

Anyway, will catch up with posts tomorrow. Have a good Monday all.

LOL, Diane - sounds like something from a horror film!  By the way, I also love the word DUDE.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

I'll admit that the last time I heard it used was in Crocodile Dundee, which was a while back.

I didn't know Hawick was pronounced like that.  The hardest language for me to pronounce is undoubtedly Welsh.

  • Morning everybody

AQ - I remember Crocodile Dundee using the term "Sheila"! That's how I've heard of it. Question for you, though. How would you pronounce the West Yorkshire village, "Slaithwaite"?
