Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 28 July 2013

Happy new week and new month!

The world's oldest known calendar device has been found in Scotland. It's based on the phases of the moon, as well as the position of the sun, and is 10,000 years old.

That's 5,000 years older than the first formal calendar devices found in the Near East, which were thought to be the earliest. The device provides further evidence that Scotland's early civilisations were much more advanced than previously thought.

  • ALAN:  Not surprised to see that people are objecting in a marked manner, to being subjected to this new fracking idea without any actual scientific backing that its safe....

  • Just stopped my H.work for a cuppa break, so thought I would put on some more Flower Show pics:

Is this a Boat Shed or a Shed Boat??  LOL!!

        -  it was beautifully made, and very expensive looking - didn't enquire as to the price as don't think my OH would buy me one!!

We also met a lovely horse made of recycled materials......

  • Linda :Thanks for all the lovely pics from the Tatton flower show.

OG and Eagle Eye : Very many congratulations.

Extremely humid here today with temp already 26.1c.

Meanwhile the badger army mobilises to help the Frackfighters:

  • Been a few probs round here recently, but time to post a couple of pics from our trip to Scotland last month.

Being one who prefers to drive long distances overnight, we set off from Yorkshire in the early hours, hitting daylight by the time we reached Cumbria. This very early arrival across the border meant we had a few hours spare to head to the coast of Ayrshire, heading towards the Erskine Bridge. Ended up in the beautiful banks of the Firth of Clyde at INVERKIP.

The pic below is the disused chimney at Inverkip Power Station.

Since we have come home they have blown it up! Grrr...see below.

Then onto the Erskine Bridge before landing in the very nice town of Dumbarton, to a hotel right beside the busy railway line, heaven for the trainspotter in me!

  • LOL  Alan:  Like the badger ready for action!!

Mulberry:  Good to see you back on here again.  Sorry that there have been sad events to keep you busy.  Lovely pics of your trip:  I watched the demolition staight away, as I love those!  Something in me must like destruction, although it always leaves a great big hole in the sky when something like that goes, even when its an ugly industrial thing.

I'm signing off now as we are going soon, Take Care of Yourselves, Everyone.

  • CONGRATULATIONS TO OG AND EE on your 45th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

  • There was a flower pic posted with my above post, but it hasn't appeared !!

Hot here today. 30c at the moment. We have had a busy few days with visitors so I am now way behind with all your posts.

If I haven't missed you Linda. Have a lovely weekend.

  • Thanks for all the good wishes.

Just been pottering among web pages out of frustration with trying to make some food and entertainment bookings! We have the Environmental Art Festival Scotland the last weekend in August, coinciding with the beginning of Flavour Fortnight, during which we also have some other stuff to go to, so two weeks with a very full diary then.

Heather – how nice to have the day in Elgin with family. I guess you will soon be packing for France.

AQ – sorry if I was over-critical of your Daughter and the child; I just believe children should do as they are told, and you need to start how you mean to go on! Your 9am temperature sounds very pleasant for a sunny spring day – I hope it lasted.

Annette – I am even refusing the church cream teas on Sundays this summer – no good being careful most of the time and then eating silly things!

Linda – not a special meal tonight – J is out again so we had main meal lunchtime and will have a salad tea. Lovely Clematis – I don’t think we saw it before! Ah, I have probably missed you as you set off to Wales.

Clare – I don’t know whether we have difficult relatives – I think it is I who am known for being difficult! Have a great week off, and enjoy Wales.

Mulberry – I watched the Inverkip chimney on the news at the weekend – it had been the tallest unsupported building in Scotland: that honour now goes to Longannet, I believe.

Brenda – I was wondering about your apparent absence – good to “see” you again! We have more pleasant temperatures now, and had quite a lot of rain again this morning.

Not sure what I am doing next – maybe some birthday cards since J is not on my desk!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

I love going to Glaslyn - we didn't visit last time as it was too hot for poor Buzz - very high temps.  Enjoy!!  (their chicks have both done well this year, hooray!)

We're going to Dyfi.  We did visit Glaslyn last year but we didn't see a single bird!!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
