Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 28 July 2013

Happy new week and new month!

The world's oldest known calendar device has been found in Scotland. It's based on the phases of the moon, as well as the position of the sun, and is 10,000 years old.

That's 5,000 years older than the first formal calendar devices found in the Near East, which were thought to be the earliest. The device provides further evidence that Scotland's early civilisations were much more advanced than previously thought.

  • Good Morning.  Dull & dry here. Heavy rain predicted by late afternoon. Warmer temps again as the week ends: we are off again tomorrow for a long weekend,

My grandson is now two & a half and has got to the stage where he is much too busy to contemplate his afternoon nap.... but then can suddenly flake out, tired out, mid-afternoon. He is beginning to prefer the 'No!'  word, too.

  • I might be better off if I answered "NO!" any time friends or family asked me anything! LOLOL

  • Linda - Thank you for Flower Show pics.

LittleMiss' use of the word No or NoNoNo and refusing to eat or get dressed, kicking & screaming when needing to go in carseat, etc etc is getting Dau2 down. I'm afraid Dau has met her match, but it is no joke and Dau1 & I are rallying around to give Dau2 some time-out. This phase has gone on long enough and we haven't reached the Terrible Twos yet.

A great day in library. I solved several mysteries (churches of course). Sunny day predicted tomorrow - I feel a photo excursion coming on.

  • Diane – those animals will be hungry by fall if they are eating all the apples now! I think our Finches are finding natural food now, seeds by the hedges along laneside verges and field edges, but the niche at the feeders is being filled by the House Sparrows, who were extremely prolific breeders this year! Sorry you have not received the insurance money yet; I would have thought they could do a transfer direct into your bank account, since they are happy to receive premium payments that way in their direction!

Annette – are you getting sea mists which are keeping the sun off until 1pm? Doesn’t stop you dashing about, I see! I think the double coffin in Leicester car park is causing more interest across the pond than it is here!

Linda – rain shouldn’t reach us until overnight, as it is moving up from the south. Enjoy your weekend away.

AQ – do you not think that special attention from you is giving your Granddaughter what she wants? I am no childcare expert and kept well clear of our Grandchildren, but I wonder if this is something which your Daughter needs to work through, with the support of her Husband, rather than have you step in so often. Pleased to see you had a good day at the library.

Well, things to do before going out. Back later.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • AQ:  sorry to hear about LittleMiss becoming so difficult:  it happens sometimes and then they seem to grow out of it, thank goodness. Not an easy stage!

Annette:  I didn't know anything about the new find in the Leicester Car Park until Diane mentioned it:  we don't always get the same news here, I think! There are now discussions ongoing about the tomb to be built to hold the King who was so irreverently parked over - of course, the cost is going to be huge, but then I suppose they might get some of the revenue back in tourism.

Just got a very very annoying message from my Brother who lives in S. Africa and never seems to do anything by halves. I have not seen him since our father's funeral in 1986, but he still manages to be a pain, even from thousands of miles away.   AAaaaargh!!!  Will go and take it out on doing some cleaning before I go out later for a cuppa with Friend.

Keep meaning to describe the lovely meal we had with Friend & her OH last Friday.  We thought perhaps a BBQ in the heat, but when we arrived the table was set with the best china & glass.  We were served cold melon soup (!) with parma ham in it, and herbs.  Delicious!!  Then we had a plate with steak cut into strips, with a chilli and something else dressing, served with a salad and new potatoes.  Yummy!  Then for dessert, a glass bowl of yoghurt layered with cucumber creamed with creme freche - it was amazing!   Lingered over lovely cheeses, (I enjoyed the drippy Brie) and huge strawberries picked locally.  A wonderful summery meal and good company.  Lots of gossip with our visitor from the south, who has been on several cruises in the last year, some of them completely on her own:  good for her!

  • Here are the next pics from the Flower Show:

One of my OH's favourites, clematis....

We dragged ourselves out of the big Marquee and went in search of some gardens - there were less Show Gardens this year :-(( and some of them we did not like at all so there are less pics of those.

That last one was from the Cancer Research Society.  This is another one, done by some young enthusiasts:  a lot of their stuff was recycled. The seating is made from old pallets, for instance.

This is an idea for somewhere to keep out of the rain in the Great British Summer!  Children loved it. To enter, you had to walk down a slope and the whole thing was sunk into the ground.

  • Hi everyone. I know that some of you are avid followers of  the brown bear project in Minnesota. Recently it was threatened with closure. Well it seems as if it will continue with huge restrictions. The biggest of these seems to be no more internet coverage of bears in their dens, which of course is where it began for most of us.

  • Tiger - That is very disappointing news, what a shame.

  • Sorry to hear that, Tiger. A big disappointment, as Starling says.

  • If they are asking for a loan
