Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 28 July 2013

Happy new week and new month!

The world's oldest known calendar device has been found in Scotland. It's based on the phases of the moon, as well as the position of the sun, and is 10,000 years old.

That's 5,000 years older than the first formal calendar devices found in the Near East, which were thought to be the earliest. The device provides further evidence that Scotland's early civilisations were much more advanced than previously thought.

  • A wonderful Orkney sunset last night. Posted by Sheila Fleet Jewellery.

  • Nice picture dibnlib

HeatherB - Not at all depressed by your post at the end of last week, and hope it helped to share your troubles and understandable worries amongst friends.

Lindybird - Tatton Park looks like a place for hay fever sufferers to avoid! What an explosion of colour.

OG - Flash floods abound at the moment, hope they are abating now up your way. We had a drive round Pwllheli on Sunday evening during a torrential downpour, soggy tourists everywhere.

  • Hi Mulberry - Welcome back!   Not a bad idea about the Weekly Chat.  There is at present a good system where whoever starts the new one, puts a link at the end of the old one, but I never thought about trying to find it after a week or so!

Thanks for the great sunset pic, dibnlib. :-))

  • Another good day at Manton Bay. Cooler and cloudier than of late but still very pleasant. There are 2 GCG nests, one with 3 eggs and I cant see into the other one as it is too far out. Lots of little egrets around and Mr Heron. Let's hope the otter leaves the GCG eggs alone this time.

  • Been a lovely sunny day here – until we wanted to go into the garden this evening to water parts the rain hasn’t reached, and we got very wet! Tomorrow is supposed to stay dry, but I see it could be worse for folks further south. Had the haircut today – feels so much lighter!

Diane – that is a bad situation to be in with that tree so near the house; do hope it can soon be dealt with, and that you will be able to get rid of the timber and get cleared up. Remember to stay in touch so we all know that you are okay there! All signs of our Monday flood had gone today, but it was still a major talking point in town. Locals and those of us incomers who care to listen know there are underground burns, but the “powers that be” won’t listen to our knowledge of where the water comes from!

AQ – another day with LM (or as you now call her “MissNO”!); you really are a glutton for punishment! I hope you enjoyed your getaway at the library today.

Linda – thanks again for more Tatton photos! Those Cannas are very impressive, and some lovely mixed nursery displays.

Welcome back, Mulberry & NiteOwl – I wondered why you had gone quiet! Did you ride the railways from Porthmadog? Sensible solution re referencing previous week Chat!

Alan – more good photos, thanks. Glad you had another good day out.

We shall be shopping at Morrison’s in Dumfries tomorrow, with the usual garden centre lunch on the way, leaving J to make his own!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Nice pics, Alan. Can see you're enjoying your visits to Man ton Bay this year.

  • Just missed you, OG! Enjoy your lunch tomorrow.

  • Thanks, LINDA!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi, all. Rain with brief thunderstorms and unusually cool temps here for the last few days. The weather folks are calling it "Julytober". Maybe an early autumn this year?

The deer and other animals have eaten almost all of the apples, except those at the very top of the apple tree. I'm going out tomorrow and shake the tree a bit to see whether I can make some of those fall.

14 new wasps hatched out today in the window nest. The big split tree is still standing. No cheque from the insurance company yet.

OG: Enjoy your lunch out tomorrow! I'm glad that you didn't have any damage to your property due to the flooding. Sounds like the Powers that Be should listen to the locals who are closer to the land and know where the underground burns are.

Alan: Lovely photo. Glad you are enjoying Manton Bay.

AQ: Hope you enjoyed the library today.

    Dibnlib: Lovely Orkney sunset.

Lindy: Beautiful photos from the flower show!!! I see that they've found another coffin (a double coffin, one of them made of lead?) in King Richard's car park excavation.

Mulberry: You can always find the previous weekly chat thread on the main forum page, where all the LG threads are listed. It's always at the bottom of Page 1 or the top of Page 2. (Just scroll down to the bottom and click on Page 2 if it's not on the first page.) Does that make sense?

You can also get to the main forum page by clicking the "Forum" tab at the top of this page. Welcome back to you and NiteOwl.

    Night, all.

  • Evening all: Another day to-ing and fro-ing; sun out around 1 again.  Now to catch up.

Lindybird:  Lovely garden pix.  Re funnies - I share the sentiment re recipes!   We rarely get thunderstorms here; unlike Arizona (where granddaughter is) where spectacular electrical storms are the norm most afternoons at this time of year.  Nice garden pix; I prefer the more casual arrangements.

OG:  Re your OH's visit to AA, my sister says you can go north-to-south easily in the UK, but very difficult to go east-west.  Still, very nice he was able to borrow J's car. Hope the flooding has subsided; typical that nobody in charge is listening to the locals.

Heather: Weigela spelling (at least as far as Google is concerned) resulted in pretty pix of a nice shrub.  I too am guilty of scanning posts, then reading a response from another LGer regarding something significant I've missed!  Eeeek.

dibnlib: Lovely pix - all of them.  What a nice idea - to take folks with special needs on canal cruises.

Diane: Have been so long catching up; have you receive the check for the tree soon?  Hope it covers the cost of the removal...  Do you have craigslist in your neck of the woods or somewhere you can advertise the wood? Perhaps for sale, especially if it's good fireplace wood.  Hey!! Thanks for the link to the MRSA topic. We have a very active oceanographic program at UCSB with lots of links to Scripps, etc.  Wonder how they found this particular compound and if they were actively searching for it.

AQ: I forgot - which one is MissNO?  I see OG has figured out it's Miss "No!" Is that the new name for Little Miss?  (Sounds like my great-granddaughter's new favorite word.)

Mulberry:  When I look for an old Weekly Chat, I just go to the main forums page and look for it by the date.

Alan: Sounds like you're having some good times out and about with your cam.

Margo: More special thoughts winging their way to you!

I e-mailed my sister in the UK this morning, saying that in spite of the US's rejection of the monarchy some 250 years ago, the fascination with UK's royalty extends beyond new babies to this morning's CNN Home Page covering the tomb-within-in-a-tomb discovered at Leicester.

Thanks ALL for pix and posts; stay well and safe. Have a good Wednesday everyone.
