Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 28 July 2013

Happy new week and new month!

The world's oldest known calendar device has been found in Scotland. It's based on the phases of the moon, as well as the position of the sun, and is 10,000 years old.

That's 5,000 years older than the first formal calendar devices found in the Near East, which were thought to be the earliest. The device provides further evidence that Scotland's early civilisations were much more advanced than previously thought.

  • Evening all:

Diane: Thanks for starting us off.  The frustrating thing about these brownies is that they tell you, on the box, that they "cool to doneness" but they didn't. Will leave them in for another 5 minutes next time round.  Oh my; hope the bad mood passes with not too many sweary words - what's happening with that tree? Is it going to cost a small fortune?  How long will the wasps stick around?  My daughter has found a barn swallow nest inside her rattan window shade (it attaches to the eaves and rolls up and down); consequently, no shade at that window until the birds are done.  That's a fascinating site regarding the Scotland discovery - first spotted from the air, by plane I assume. I'm fascinated by the possibilities that satellite images now offer to archeologists - lost cities deep in the jungle of South America, mysterious patterns under the deserts of North Africa.......

AQ: Did the vanity get installed?  When I was with my sister in Ireland a few years back, I was ready to settle on one B&B but she wanted to look at bit longer, whereupon we found a wonderful place right on a small lake. The owner made us a pot of tea and we sat outside in the sunshine and made friends with the resident dog. It was a working farm; a real find.

Heather:  I doubt anyone was depressed by your post - and it's perfectly understandable that your previous wretched experience would have you on edge. As Limpy says, we're all on this ride together! In the meantime, doesn't sound like your OH is planning to let anything get in the way of his garage work.

    dibnlib: Lovely photo that!

Margo: Extra special hugs and wishes heading your way!

    Have a good Sunday all.

  • Good Morning, All!  This is said with some feeling, as I came on last night to find I was signed out and the Site would not let me sign back in again <SIGH>

I saw Heathers posts but could not reply. Heather, no one was depressed, you can share your worries and woes on here and we will all understand. Your OH sounds as resiliant as mine, and is not going to be held back when he wants to get on with something.

  • We had a very hot day at the Flower Show - we decided that it must have been about 30 degrees as the morning went on, and we stayed until 1.30 but could stand no more and went home, shattered. The displays were good, but there seemed to be less actual gardens this year and I was deeply disappointed that there was no bandstand, so very little live music, which usually adds much to the atmosphere. We bought a hardy fuchsia plant, and I bought a linen hat to keep the sun off. Photos later of some of the displays.
  • Thanks to Diane for starting us off - that's interesting about the calendar. I've often thought that there was probably a lot more than meets the eye about ancient cultures, but no hard evidence surviving.
  • <Insert sweary words here> Every Sunday this new Downgrade insists I sign in again. Now I haven't time to chat.

Heather - This is a great place to "let off steam". Your concerns are quite understandable. I'm sending you a package of strengthening thoughts.

Vanity installed perfectly by s-I-l with OH hovering, Dau reading her Kindle, LittleMiss playing with my box of toys and they brought the cat!  It took so long I had to dash down to chicken shop for tea, not being able to do a "loaves & fishes" on planned snack tea, meanwhile Boys went off to hardware store for bibs&bobs, and finally Dau had to go to open-til-late supermarket for real milk for LM as it was her bedtime, then they left for 40 min drive home. This morn OH & I restored home to pre-LM order, installed our things in new drawers, throwing out heaps of out-of-date stuff. I won't say how old <grin>

  • LINDY  Really looking forward to your photos of Tatton Park. We really must go there, but not when it is 30 degrees plus!!!!

Another pic from our canal walk

  • Good morning, all!  We're all looking forward to visiting the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary this afternoon - we're going to renew our adoption of a particularly beautiful snowy owl.

  • Dibnlib : Thanks for the lovely pics.

Just got back from Barnwell where there are no cygnets this year for the first time I can remember. Probably due to the flooding of their normal nesting area earlier in the year. There were 4 or 5 adult swans around but no young. No kingfishers either this year. We did see a pair of Great Crested Grebes with 2 young. Here is a pic of one of the youn young with my x96 zoom.

  • Good afternoon all. Didn’t get online yesterday – OH was quite late back from Cambridge and then had family news to share. Auntie is slowly settling in at the nursing home, but having difficulty understanding the technology of a modern set-up; to many controllers (bed, chair, TV, telephone) so she gets muddled and then tries all the buttons, so she cuts off her own telephone or moves the wrong thing! She is still chair-bound until they get a physio to help her back on her feet. J and I had a good couple of days and I even found more time to sit down than when OH is around! We shared food prep etc and all went smoothly.

Annette – pleased you had a good, if busy, day on Friday – sorry about the Brownie middles! We recently also replaced our old fire extinguishers. I hope you are having a good weekend.

AQ – your Saturday sounds “interesting, but at least the job got done! Strange that you have to sign in again every time we move to a new thread!

Diane – I hope you have managed some rest and relaxation, and are feeling better. Sorry the Wasps have moved in again – I hoped they had gone away to stay having missed last year! Thanks for starting the new week.

Heather – of course you have said nothing to keep us away! The episode with the heart scare must have been terrible for you to go through after your previous experience, and you are right to share your worries as we all get concerned for one another. But I was pleased that your OH had help with laying the slabs. I see you later found more company on here that evening!

Dibnlib – lovely peaceful Canal pictures – although Rosebay Willowherb is a weed when it pops up in towns and cities, it is really quite beautiful in the right place, and gives some lovely colour, especially in the reflections.

Linda – sorry you had to sign in; I have been kept in since that small hiccup after the changes. How sensible for you to give up at the Show when it got so hot; sorry there was no bandstand, I always thinks that helps the atmosphere at such events.

Limpy – I hope you are enjoying the Owl Sanctuary and you find “your” Snowy Owl in good health.

Alan – another great photo – but sorry there are no Cygnets.

We had rain but no thunder and no floods. The morning was rather wet and we decided to stay at home all day as more rain is predicted this evening and overnight. OH is fitting a new ceiling extractor fan in “his” shower room, and then has to check why the Hoover (it really is that brand!) keeps overheating. Looks like I may get to sit down with a book before making dinner!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Whew!! We went to bed weary last night but had to get up early as an influx of visitors this morning. My OH's niece was visiting - she was our bridesmaid together with her sister all those years ago, but then moved away from this area to the South Midlands when she married. She was up to stay with her father for the weekend, so wanted to bring the family over for the chance of her two girls to get to know their second cousins and everyone: both of my sis-in-laws came with lots of their children, their spouses and Their children - about seventeen of us sat in the garden with coffee, tea & cake. After about an hour & a half the heavens opened so we had a scrabble to get children, cake & cushions all indoors fast. A good chat was had by all, and commemorative photos taken. My dear sis-in-law had baked fruit cake herself, and made fairy cakes with her grandchildren, but I cheated as I had been out yesterday so served bought goodies. OG good to know that your Ancient Auntie is settling in. Not easy for them so adapt but at least you know she's being taken care of.
