I don't believe this. It is like what they say about buses. You wait for one and then three arrive !!

  • Those two sightings could be the same bird heading north through Lincolnshire and then into Yorkshire. Hornsea Mere looks a good spot for ospreys to fish.

  • Alan, between the Osprey Sighting Page and this one, you are certainly working hard. Thank you.

  • Pip confirmed in second egg at Norfolk Botanical eagles.

  • Oh dear! 24 hour catch up – best to just say thanks for all news, pictures links etc etc.  Good to have the Osprey reports, hope fish-stocks have survived the harsh winter!

GeorgeG – have posted a question on your page, about Vane Farm …  I too thought ship-to-ship oil transfers were stopped under legislation following lobbies last year.

Dibnlib – can’t get ITV Scotland here to watch Wild Scotland – and it doesn’t seem to be on their equivalent of iPlayer!  Very disappointed.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Here I sit feeling strange. I dislike hairdressers, preferring to toss my hair into a knot or leave it loose. But, tonight Dau#2 is celebrating her long-delayed engagement party. (It is almost the first anniversary LOL.) And I thought I had better have a trial run for my hairdo for the wedding in Sept. Not sure if I like the result but I guess D will have her say.

Diane - These car races bring out the worst in everyday drivers. They go crazy for a few weeks. They seem to see themselves as racing drivers and do the strangest things in traffic.

jsb - Google Earth Street View is great for checking where one is going - where exactly is that shop or cousin’s house and where can I park nearby? Street view snapped my friend’s husband on a ladder cutting their hedge! And in the original Google Earth from satellite, I can tell you our suburb was taken on a Monday morning. The neighbours’ cleaning lady’s car is in their drive. In our backyard I have washing on the line. Plus there are two little blobs . . . which can only be the washing trolley and myself !!!!!!!

  • Continuing SA history . . . In 1883 the Married Women’s Property Act allowed a married woman to own and administer property in her own name. The Suffrage Act in 1894 gave women an equal right with men to vote, and to stand for election to the Colony's House of Assembly. Women with property could also vote in Legislative Council elections. In 1902 women were granted the right to vote in Federal elections. Yet it was 1959 before the first women were elected in SA.

Australia was six separate British self-governing colonies until Federation in 1901 when it became the Commonwealth of Australia. The first moves had begun in the 1880s. Even after Federation most Australians of British stock thought of themselves as British. It was only in 1949 that we ceased to have British nationality and became Australian citizens.

Meanwhile Australia had accepted immigrants from a great many countries. Britain was the main source. There were Irish with some ships carrying single girls. Emigrants from Prussia and other German states came in large numbers. The Chinese arrived in the goldfield days and later in the 1880s. Sailors from the Scandinavian countries often deserted ships in SA ports. Those from Finland were recorded as Russian Finns. Some deserters were found, others disappeared, perhaps changing their names. There were Italians and Greeks, often fishermen. A few emigrants came from France, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Syria, USA and even a few from the West Indies.
