Weekly Chat, Sunday March 7

Hi all. Off to read last week's latest posts.

  • I see in the Tearooms Forum there is a thread titled “Goldfinch arrived for breakfast!”.  Just to clarify for those who watch my Coffee Lounge and restaurant habits : this wasn’t me!!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Evening all: Nice visit with friend and lunch at Stella Mare.  Then took her on little drive around Montecito (couldn't see much behind all those huge expensive gates!) and then back to get her train home. Very windy again today.

Gary: Your Mum should have a wonderful time - is she doing the Rocky Mountaineer trip or regular Canadian railroad system?

dibnlib: Oh my, what an amazing photo of the koala.  It looks so bewildered! Makes you want to bundle it up in a nice towel. Wonder what happened to him/her.

Tiger: Just watching the Starr Ranch owl cam and chicks are up and about and puttering around. Ooh, big stretch by one.  Also the odd bug wandering about in the foreground.

OG: No chance of confusion - we all know you only show up for latte and carrot cake. :-)

Thanks everyone else for good (and not-so-good) news of various critters, cams, weather, etc. Take care.

Whatever is happening on the owl cam? What is that rat doing? See http://www.starrranch.org/blog/?page_id=2

Tiger: Apparently, that female adult owl has the unusual habit of standing dead rat prey up on their hind legs against the wall at the opening of the nest cavity. That one wood rat stood looming in the doorway there for a while. There was a dust up on the site's forum because the rigor mortis rat became on ongoing joke; some people were making up funny names for him. Others didn't find the macabre humor amusing or appropriate. I don't watch this cam because I knew the clutch was too big and things would get ugly when competition for food began. I think it's been stressful for the viewers. Barn owls don't usually focus on rats as prey (mostly voles, shrews, mice...). Strange events at that nest.

Annette, I believe this koala and the others in the immediate vicinity were OK, just very hot and thirsty.  Water was left out for them in more appropriate places so they could drink and cool off in safety.

You may remember seeing another famous koala, victim of the 2009 Victorian bushfires, photographed being given a drink of water by a fire fighter from his water bottle.  The story for this brave little girl was not so good.  She had bad burns to all feet and her ears, and suffered from smoke inhalation.  Despite loving care, she eventually gave up the struggle.

    Smiles, Jan.

Diane: I tell you, every time I walk into Best Buy they have a nature program on their flat screen displays - the resolution is wonderful, so clear. It's mouthwatering.  I think I'll be getting a lot of "Visions of...."-type programs when we finally get one of these things.   I love trains too, and "City of New Orleans" is one of my favorite songs. Even on Amtrak there's this wonderful feeling of escape and adventure. I remember going across the Plains one evening - totally flat but with a magnificent huge full moon rising. Quite extraordinary.   Anyway, just found out another friend of mine is flying from Sacramento to Burbank (north of LA "suburb) Airport at the end of this month for the weekend and am planning to take the train from here to the airport, have dinner with her there, and then take the evening train back.  Have also thought about taking the train to LA Union Station on a Sunday, then attending a Music Center (It's just up the hill) matinee performance but haven't done that yet.

Love City of New Orleans and Arlo Guthrie. Ah...riding a train in the full moon. Wonderful. I hope you enjoy your upcoming train trip(s). If you get one of those newfangled TVs, please buy two and send one to me. Ours came over on the Mayflower. LOL

  • Alen Brilliant photo of the Cumbrian osprey nest with those beautiful hills in the background.  Have been watching a series called 'The Lakes', with Rory McGrath.  Lake District is almost as beautiful as the Scottish Highlands!

  • dibnlib So sorry your friend's basset is so ill.  Hope the vet is right about catching her in time.  Super picture of the koala.  Little thing must have been so terrified of the fires.

  • Diane   Oh thank you so much for pointing me to the site forum. I never noticed it before. It is all so emotional just now and reminiscent of so many tense times on forums in times gone by. I loved it when somone pointed out that the bunnies, rats and mice might have families too!

Thanks for pointing out such a great debate.

The rat has disappeared now so I presume it has got consumed.
