Evening all. Wonderful rainbow over Santa Barbara this afternoon; more like April with heavy showers then sunshine. Don't forget to check last week's chat for Tiger's link to the Roy Dennis site about a French osprey that's already completed its migration, and Patriciat's recommendations for places to eat in Grantown (for when we all go to visit OG's son!). :-)
AQ: I'm 52 years old, and I grew up in the 1960s and early 70s. The U.S., at that time, was in a great deal of turmoil and civil unrest. The civil rights movement had emerged and "Jim Crow" laws and segregation were being overturned (we had our own version of aparteid in the U.S.). And the controversy over the war in Vietnam was tearing the country apart. It was a time of profound social change and progress, but not always peaceful. My poor parents worried constantly that I would get involved too deeply in issues and get hurt. Of course, I was strident, stubborn, and fearless. LOL! However, I think in many ways today is much more dangerous for young people. I would not want to be raising an adolescent today. I can't imagine the worry.
Annette: I had seen the Skunk program -- it was wonderful. I like skunks. I am watching Prehistoric on the Discovery Channel. They are including lots of information on Southern California (the formation of the San Andreas fault, the prehistoric animals who lived there, etc.). Pretty interesting. Thanks for the info on tsunamis!
Hey Annette, remember Mimeographs and Microfiche?
Diane - I remember those days, I'm 13 years older than you. Not sure why I wasn't involved with protests - I was at Uni but struggling. I guess I had my head down trying desperately to keep up with the work.
Caerann - Hey! I still use microfiche often! For family history research. Though mostly I am busy digitizing basic info for the internet. When I started work in 1966, we had some wonderful calculating machines. (Marchants, or am I thinking of something else?) Anyway to multiply, they churned away making a glorious busy, busy noise. Then we progressed to a computer - the size of a small room - with cards punched with holes. Ooh, sometime there were reels of paper tape with holes punched in them. I had a couple of reels as streamers when my parents went overseas by ship. My streamers lasted the longest.
aquilareen: Thanks for your history of the SA goldrush. I feel I have learned something today after reading that. It is amazing how seduced people are by yellow metal!
BTW the Dutch webcam site seems to have been revamped. Sadly there is no peregrine cam this year. I hope we can follow the adventures of Pa and S2 somehow.

Tiger - I have put my predictions on the new thread.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Reminiscing about typewriters etc does anyone remember the sliderule I used one when I was studying electrical engineering and was lucky if you could get your answer to two decimal places whereas as now with calculators the answer is given to ......... places. The weather here today is very spring like with the sun shinning and a slight breeze although it is still chilly.
OG good luck to your son on his first day in his new job

Morning everyone from TI,
Happy St Davids Day and thanks to everyone who has posted overnight. Gold rush history was very interesting and I too have learned a lot from your history lessons AQ.
The weather is much brighter today and that big round yellow thing has made an appearance. It is like coming out of a tunnel after this long dark winter.
