Well the cold frosty weather is now a distant memory and we have been reunited with our old summer friend.....rain!

And there has been plenty of it too, it is definitely welly weather, with most of the paths on the reserve needing at least waterproof boots as a minimum and maybe even a canoe in certain areas.

The wildlife has not been bothered one bit, and sightings on the reserve have been excellent. In the last few days otters have been putting on a real show, with incredible views from Lilian's and public hide as well as lower hide too. Up to four have been sighted together, and one lucky visitor today reported watching one in front of Lilian's hide, when a bittern flew across her view and then was quickly followed by a marsh harrier!!

How is that for a sighting! Bittern have been showing really well over the last few days with a safe estimate of three birds present, two very pale looking birds and one with much darker tones. These elusive reedbed skulkers often increase in numbers at this time of year, as we get birds from the continent visiting to escape the frozen weather and spend their winter months here.

Other unseasonal birds but not completely unheard of  have been our marsh harriers, we have had around four individuals overwintering at the moment which is a great increase on the one bird last winter. Other birds putting in an appearance have been water rail. The high water levels have forced these usually shy birds out onto the paths and they have been frequently reported. On the feeders we have had brambling and a good sized flock of siskin have continued to linger.

I continue in vain in my quest for a green winged teal amonsgt the spring of teal (It is only a matter of time surely), but I have had better luck with other species. After taking a stroll nearby in Carnforth with my daughter on my back (In a carrier obviously), she alerted me to the presence of a bird at the top of the tree ahead of us, a quick glance up reavealed a waxwing perched on top of the tree before being joined by four more! Not a bad find for a 15 month old child. (Nice work Isabelle) I wonder if I can claim it as a joint find? What do you mean no??

So plenty around despite the weather, get your wellies on get out there!
