I've been on site a few times over the Christmas period and with plenty of visitors, there have been some great records over the last week or so....
A marsh harrier was over the northern end of the visitor trails yesterday (Monday), along with a merlin on Phase 2 and stonechat from the visitor trails.
2 bitterns were on Phase 2 today, showing well out on ice. Much of the northern end of Phase 1 is frozen at the moment, so keep an eye open on the reedy edges, particularly around the western end of the boardwalk. Stonechat was also present today, along with an impressive 10 goldeneye in front of the Beach Hut.
We are feeding supplementary seed for farmland birds on Cottage Lane near the car park. This has attracted excellent numbers of birds, with a flock of 50+ chaffinches, 30+ goldfinches and smaller numbers of mixed tits and a jay making good use of the extra food. Keep an eye open for brambling in this flock.
A coal tit was on the Cottage Lane track yesterday - a Langford scarcity, whilst an individual was singing near the entrance gate this afternoon!
Roe deer have been regular lately, with a group of three recorded from most areas of the site.
Thanks to everyone who has been on site recently for your sightings and to all our visitors - it has been busy lately! Hope you are all enjoying it.
