Limpy and I first made it to Lakenheath last year - it was a really hot day and the walk really took it out of him. We both liked the reserve, though - it just took us forever to find time to get back! The staff on duty very kindly allowed me to drive the disabled Limpy as far as the first viewing point - this made a huge difference to him and was most appreciated by both of us.
By the time we reached the Joist Fen viewing point the weather had deteriorated to the point of drizzling but that didn't stop this marsh harrier making an appearance:
A kingfisher appeared twice on a stick in the pool in front of us but was gone before I could focus on it. I did manage to catch these lapwings coming over, though:
And this cormorant:
A family of swans started swimming towards us:
By this time it was growing cooler and it was time to get Limpy back to the car. We had a great chat with a gentleman who turned out to be none other than David White - it was great to put a face to the name! We're both looking forward to going back when the new hide is open.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Looks like you had a good day, Clare. Thanks for posting (and so glad to see you and Limpy back online!) The Swans are lovely and it is always great to see a Harrier!
Kind regards, Ann
Hello Clare & Limpy,
It was indeed good to put some names to faces! Thanks for sharing these great photos and we hope to see you on the reserve again soon.
Regards,
David White
Many thanks for the kindly comments - I wish the marsh harrier had come just a bit closer!
Lovely shots of the Swans, Clare. At least they are more approachable than Marsh Harriers which never seem to come close enough but at least your saw it.
You are lucky to have these great reserves with range. Must try to get up there some time.
