Here's just a few shots of the new Avalon Hide, currently under construction at Ham Wall. It's going to be a 2 storey hide with a lower walkway at the bottom and a covered upper storey.
Looking a bit like Noah's ark.
View from the upper storey.
Since these photos were taken the roof has gone on and there are 6 large glass windows arriving in the next week or so. It will then be up to staff & volunteers to add some finishing touches eg shelves, benches/seats and some guttering and any other little snagging jobs. The views from the top are fantastic and a Bittern flew so close in front yesterday Steve Hughes the Site Manager described it as eyeball to eyeball.
An exciting new addition to the reserve. The car park facilities are also nearing completion. The sewage treatment system is in and the concrete footings for the toilets and reception building are going in next week. The buildings will then be ready to drop into place - it all sounds so simple doesn't it. Let's hope it all runs like clockwork. We'll be up and running for the busy Starling season when the hoards of visitors descend to see the spectacular shows.
Hi Brenda,
I've just been told about the comments on the SOS site this morning (I've been away for a few days). Yes the windows will have openings to allow people to use scopes and take pictures etc. reducing problems caused by glare/dirt/dust etc.
A lot of comment on Somerset Ornithological site. Will the windows have openings?
