To thank our Wednesday volunteers for their sterling work all year round on the reserve, the last work day before Christmas is always a birding trip with no work at all!  This year we got permission to view the private hide on Rockcliffe Marsh (thanks to Brian Hodgson) so we spent a day on the Solway.  Not a stunning day, weather wise, but it stayed dry and the frost kept off, which we had been warned would deter the birds.

Viewing Rockcliffe Marsh from the boathouse first, we picked up Lapwing, Shelduck, Barnacle Goose and a skulking Little Egret.  Then on to the hide which offered expansive views of a large pool, hitherto unnoticed, with islands here and there.  The pool was well used by flocks of Teal, Wigeon, Mallard and Redshank, as well as Goosander, Little Grebe and Grey Heron.  The surrounding hedgerows were dotted with song birds, including Reed Bunting, to add to our list.

Next we walked along the river Eden from Rockcliffe and picked up a large flock of Curlew feeding on the promontory plus Goldeneye in the water.  A last stop at Walby Flash on the way back produced close views of Whooper Swan, unperturbed by birders at close quarters.  Amongst the group we also picked up Mute Swan, Greylag and Pink-footed Goose, making it a worthwhile pause.  A good day was had by all and 42 species were seen.
