As I make my rounds on the reserve, I often over hear "Is it, isn't it?" discussions and also get asked directly "Which is which?" for some of the more similar species.

With this in mind I'm going to have a crack at some relevant species that seem to cause the most frequent confusion, and the first in this series will be the two small plovers. Little ringed plover is on the top, ringed plover underneath.

Hopefully this can be an easy reference, cut out and keep style crib sheet to help you separate the two. Not mentioned is the leg colour, with the little ringed plover having pale flesh coloured legs and the ringed plover having stockier orange legs.

I have a few more species up my sleeve that I will try and cover in the next few weeks but if you have any tricky species that you regularly see/think you see/don't see at Frampton or Freiston and would like some pointers then get in touch with us on here, Facebook, Twitter or e-mail and I'll try to help as best I can. Another alternative is to browse through the excellent selection of pictures in our Flickr group. There's a good chance that if you've seen something on your visit, someone else may have snapped it and shared it there.
